SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,761, dated February 23, 1897.. Application filed March 2, 1895. Renewed August 24, 1896. Serial No. 603,774. (No model.)
To all whom, it Wray concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. LANGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roasting Apparatus for Coffee, .&c. 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication.
This invention relates to that type of coeeroasting apparatus in which the coffee or other material to be roasted is contained within a horizontally-arranged revolving drum that is heated by means of a fire or other usual means; and the present improvement has for its objects, iirst, to provide simple, durable, and efficient means for supporting the horizontal roasting-cylinder so that it will be free to lengthen and shorten with the variations in temperature to which it is exposed, and, second, to provide a cheap and simple manner of supporting the head of the discharge end of the roasting-cylinder so that it can be readily and conveniently moved away from such end of the roasting-cylinder to admit of the rapid discharge of the contents of the same when required. I attain such objects by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal section` at line fr, Fig. 2, illustrating a roasting apparatus embodying my present invention; Fig. 2, a detail front elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a detail longitudinal section illustrating the feeding-orifice at the rear of the roasting-cylinder.
Similar numerals of reference ,indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the usual side walls of a roasting-furnace, and 2 and 3 the metal front and rear walls of the same, such furnace being provided with the usual fire-grate, ring-door, ash-pit door,`&c. as vusual to this class of apparatus.
4 is the roasting-cylinder of any usual construction, perforated or otherwise, its rear end being closed by a head 5, that is of the following formation: a main annular portion 5,
5o having a flanged rim for the attachment of the roasting-cylinder, a spider portion 6, to
which its rear carrying-shaft 7 is attached, and a conical neck 8, that is adapted to turn in a close manner in a similarly-formed offset in the metal rear Wall 3 of the furnace, the usual feeding-orilice 5 being made in this portion of the wall 3, as shown in Fig. 3.
9 is a bracket on the rear 'wall 3, carrying the bearing-box for the'rear carrying-shaft 7 of the roasting-cylinder, endwise movement of such shaft in said bearing being prevented by the collars 10 and 11 on said shaft. 12 is a bevel-gear on said shaft 7, and 13 a bevel-pinion gearing therewith and arranged on a counter-shaft that carries the drivin g-pulley 14 of the apparatus.
At its forward end the roasting-cylinder is attached to the rim 15 of the spider 16, to which the forward carrying-shaft 17 is secured, as
shown, the rim portion 15 turning in a close `manner in a proper orifice in the front Wall 2 of the furnace.
18 is a bracket carrying the bearing-box for the forward earrying-shaft17 of the roastingcylinder, endwise movement of such shaft in such bearing-box being prevented by the co1- lars 19 and 20 on said shaft.
In order to compensate for expansion and contraction of the roasting-cylinder, I make the bracket 1S longitudinally adjustable as a whole, and to this end 21 are sleeves on the opposite ends of said bracket that are adapted to slide upon the longitudinally-projecting rods or slides 22 on the furnace-front 2.
23 is a hopper or housinginclosing the front or discharge end of the roasting-cylinder.
24 is a door or cover of any usual construction closing the discharge end of the roastingcylinder and mounted upon the shaft 17 by means of a central hub 27, so as to be capable of a limited sliding movement upon the shaft to close and unclose the discharge end of the roastingcylinder, as required, such movements taking place Within the housing orhopper 23. Movement is communicated to the door or cover 24c by any usual and suitable means, preference beinggiven to the mechanism illustrated in the drawings, in which 25 is a hand-lever pivoted at one end on` the bracket 18, its central portion being engaged with the hub 27, while its free or operating end is adapted to be engaged by the lockinglug 26 on the bracket 18 to lock said door in its closed condition.
Having thus fully described my said invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a roasting-chamber, supported against end movement, at its driven end, and a moving bracket, Carrying its free end, substantially as set forth.
2. The Combination of a roasting-@bamberg supported against end movement, at its driven end, and a moving bracket supporting its free end, and adapted to slide upon longitudinallyextending rods, or slides, on the furnace-front, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with the roasting-cylinder, and its forward carrying-shaft 17, of the door or cover 24, arranged to slide upon said shaft, and means for movingsaid door, to open or Close the end of the roasting-cylinder, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the roasting-cylinder, and its forward carrying-shaft 17, vof the door or cover 24, arranged to slide upon said shaft, and means for moving said door, to open or oiose the end of the roasting-cylinder, said means Consisting of a lever 25, oonneeted to the hub of said door, and adapted to be engaged by a 1oeking-1ug 26, substantiaily as set forth.
