HENRY C. HOOD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONF- HALF TO WILLIAM H. GEBAUER, OF SAME PLAGE.
HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,498, dated August 9, 1881.
Application filed December 27, 1880. (No model.)
To all 'whom tt may concern Be it known that I, HENRY C. Hoon, a citizen ot' the United States, residing in the city Qand countyot'Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heaters, which improvement is fully setforth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a top or plan view ot' the heater 1o embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a Vertical section thereof.
Similar letters of' reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists ot' aheater formed of a block of metal, heated and placed in a box with a lining or packing which completely envelops the block, said lining or packing being formed ot' materials which burn slowly and are ignited by the hot block, the inclosing-box bezo ing afterward made approximately air-tight,
as will be hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a box, which is provided with a closely-fitting lid, B, and a perforated bottom, G.
D represents a plate, whichis supported on brackets or hangers D', secured to the tloor of au apartment or otherwise sustained.
E represents a drum, which incloses the box A, and is open at bottom or sides, or' both, a
,30 sufficiently large air-space,a,existingbetween the twolparts, the drum being suspended from the tloor of the apartment or otherwise sustained; and, it'desred, the brackets or hangers D' may be bolted, riveted, or otherwise secured to the drum E.
Within the box A is a cubical or other shaped block, F, of steel or other metal ot' a nature that maybe highly heated, and a packing or lining, G, formed ot' charcoal mixed with 4o tire-clay or lime or other powdered or lumpy substance of poor conducting nature and which burns slowly. Alayer of the powderis placed on the bottom of the box A, and the block F, heated to a high degree, is placed in the box 45 on said layer, after which the side and .top spaces between the block and box are also v filled with powder so that the block is completely enveloped.
The openings ot' the bottom C create somewhat of a draft through the powder or lining, 5o so that the hot block mayignite the latter, and so that chilling ot' the block is prevented. The lid Bis then applied to the box, and the box placed on the plate D ofthe brackets or hangers D', said plate closing the openings of the 55 bottom plate, C, and the box beingthus approximately air-tight.
It will be seen that, owing to the lining or packing G, the heat ot' the block F is passed oft' slowly, but powerfully, through the same, 6o and the box A is kept at a high temperature, whereby the air admitted into the drum E and striking the hot box A is heated, and so passed out of. the register or into the pipes which lead into the apartment or place to be warmed. As the block cools slowly it renders service for a long time. Vhen the block requires reheatingthe box is opened, the top packing removed, the block withdrawn, and side packing also removed, after which the 7o block,'again heated, is placed iu the box and the other operations are repeated.
I am aware that it is not new to employ a heated block of metal and an inclosiug noncouducting box for the purpose ot a heater, and therefore disclaim the same, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Tile box A, in combination with a block 8o of metal enveloped in packing ot' such a nature that it burns slowly, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A heater consisting of a heated block ot metalenveloped in packingwhichburns slowly, 8 5 and inclosed in a box provided with means for making it approximately air-tight, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
H. C. HOOD.
