Description
UNI'IED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES RICHMOND, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED TOOL.
Specicaton'forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,769, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RICHMOND, of Worcester city and county, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Combined Wrench and Tool Holder; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufcient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it Vmost nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements Without further invention Or experiment.
The nature of my invention and improvements consists in a novel arrangement for adjusting the jaws to diiierent sizes, and also in making the end of the handle A (see drawings) with a socket and suitable spring-catch to receive and hold the tools B B', and also in making these tools reversible.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows my improved Wrench with a part of the sliding jaW removed to showr the interior. Fig. 2 shows one of the tools when removed from the socket.
C is the head, connected to the bar D, to
. which the handle A is affixed. E is the movable jaw sliding On the bar D, and having a stopcatch, F, arranged in a cavity above the bar D. The stop F is sO made that it rests on the bar D, and a spring, z', holds one end,s,v down into notches in D, as shown, and the other end, n, rests against the inside of the jaw and under the piece o, so that on pressing o it raises the other end, s, allowing the jaw to be moved, the bar D having notches along that side, as indicated by the dotted lines.
The socket in A is made with a spring-catch, U, fast to the inside of A, and projecting a little, as shown, to facilitate the loosening of it to remove the tool, and has a projection to catch into a notch, L, in the tools. (Shown in Fig. 2.) l By raising the spring U the tool may be removed and the ends changed or another put in its,I place, the dierent ends being tted to the various uses desired, thus adapting it to many uses and very much increasing the efficiency of the Whole. I
I am aware that movable tools have been adapted tO handles in various Ways. These I do not claim; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved compound tool consisting of the Wrench, socket, and double bit, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein described.
CHARLES RICHMOND.
L. A. G. ARNOLD.
