SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 620,785, dated March 7, 1899. Application filed December 24, 1898. 1 $eria1No. 700,Z40. (No model.)
{b all whom it Jncty concern-.-
Be it known that I, REINHOLD KLATT, of Strong City, in the county of Chase and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved \Vrench, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a wrench with adjustable jaws which may be set to the nut by a mere'movement of the han- IO dle of the wrench as contradistinguished from operating the jaws through the medium of a screw or like element.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claims del 5 fine the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of referenceindicate corresponding parts in all the Views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation thereof with parts broken away to illustrate the operation of the wrench. Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1, and Fig. Gis a detail perspective View of the link for driving the adj usting-jaw.
The wrench is provided with a handle 6,
having a slot 7, in which is movable abutton 8, such button being attached to a sliding block 9, mounted in the handle and connected in turn with a rod 10, which carries an expansive spiral spring 11, pressing against a 3 5 double stop-pawl 12. This pawl is pushed upwardly by the spring 11 (see Fig. 1) and slides in the longitudinally-extending slot 1-1L of the handle 6, which also carries the rod 10 and spring 11.
4o Mounted to swing on the end of the handle 6, adjacent to the pawl 12, is the main jaw 15 of the wrench, which has an extension 16, forming the jaw proper, and which has a guideway 17, in which is mounted to slide the adjusting-jaw 18 of the wrench. This jaw 18 has an extension 19, movable toward and from the extension 16 and forming the adjustingjaw proper. Formed on the jaw 15 and concentric to the pivot 20 thereof are segmental 5o ratchets 21, which act, respectively, with the arms of the double pawl 12, whereby to hold the jaw 15 in'the desired position. The sliding or adjusting jaw 18 is connected with the handle 6 by means of a link 22, and the sliding movement of the jaw 18 on the jaw 15 is limited by a pin 23, which is fastened in the jaw 15 and extends across between the cheekpieces that form the slideway 17 of the said jaw 15.
WVhen the wrench has its parts in the po- I sition shown in Fig. 1, the jaw 18 will be pushed by the links 22 as close to the jaw 15 as it is possible for the first-named jaw to move, and consequently the wrench will be adjusted for the smallest-sized nuts. When the wrench is in the position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, the jaws are opened to a greater capacity. Now to adjust the jaws to a nut the wrench in the position shown in Fig. 3 is placed on the nut and the handle turned toward the left, which causes the link 22 to throw the jaw 18 toward the jaw 15, and consequently to close the two jaws on the nut. By means of the spring-pressed pawl 12 bearing against the ratchets 21 the jaws will be held in the desired adjustment, and to release the jaws the pawl may be drawn back by the button 8.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a wrench, the combination of a handle,
a jaw pivotally mounted thereon and having a ratchet, a pawl sliding on the handle and engaging the ratchet, a jaw mounted to slide on the first-named jaw, and a link connecting the second-named jaw with the handle.
2. In a wrench,the combination of ahandle,
a main jaw mounted to swing thereon, an adj Listing-jaw mounted to move on the main jaw, 0 and a link connecting the said adjusting-jaw with the handle.
3. The combination of a handle having a longitudinally-extending slot, a pawl moving in the slot, a rod in connection with the pawl, means for moving the rod, such means being carried to slide on the handle, a spring pressing the pawl, a main jaw pivoted on the handle and having a ratchet engaged by the pawl, the main jaw also having oppositely-located 10o cheek-pieces forming a slideway, an adjustway, means forsupporting the jaws, on which ing-jaw mounted to move between said cheekmeans the main jaw is pivoted, and a link 10 pieces in the slideway, and a link pivotally pivotally connected to said means and to the connecting the said handle with the adjustadj Listing-jaw.
