UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
NUMA J. FELIX, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ATTACHM ENT FOR WINDOW-SHADES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,839, dated February 9, 1897.
Application filed June 24, 1896.. Serial No. 596,672. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NUMA J. FELIX, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for VVindow-Shades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved attachment for window-shades whereby the overwinding of the shade under the action of its spring when the shade slips from the handis prevented, so that it can be readily returned into any desired position without having to pass the stick around the roller, and by which the guard-cord that is attached I to the stick applied to the lower end of the shade can be entirely dispensed with and the invention consists of an attachment for window-shades which comprises a guard-piece that is attached to the window-casing and provided with a bent middle portion extending around the shade-roller and with a downwardly-extending finger and a loop attached to the center of the stick and adapted to be engaged by the finger of the guard-piece when the shade is quickly wound up under the action of its roller, so that the shade can be readily pulled down again to any desired position by meansof a tassel or other device applied to the shade-stick, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 represents an elevation of a window-shade with my improved attachment for preventing the overwinding of the same. Fig. 2 is a Vertical section on line 2 2, Fig. 1, drawn ona somewhat larger scale; and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the loop attached to the stick of the shade.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a shade of any approved construction, which is applied to a spring-roller B, that is supported in the usual well-known manner in suitable fixtures on the window-casing. In front of the spring-roller B is applied to the upper part of the windowcasing a guard-piece, which is provided with a screw threaded shank O,by which the guard device is screwed into the upper part of the windowcasing. Below the shank a bent middle portion 0 is arranged that extends around the shade-roller and is terminated in a straight lower finger C below the shade-roller, which finger serves to engage a loop D, of metal or other suitable material, that is attached byits enlarged ends (2 cl to the stick at the lower end of the shade. In place of the screw-threaded shank of the guard-piece C ears for attaching the same or any other equivalent means for attaching the guard-piece to the window-casing may be used.
When the shade slips from the hand by the action of the spring-roller before the lockingpawls have engaged the ratchet of the springroller, the shade is wound until the loop arrives below the lower end of the guard-piece.
By the engaging of the loop D with the finger of the guard-piece O the annoying overwinding of the shade is prevented in a reliable manner, so that the annoyance and time consumed in returning the stick around the spring-roller and the unwinding of the shade back to its proper position are dispensed with. Below the loop D is preferably arrangedthe usual tassel attachment E, by which the shade is pulled down, so that the detaining-cord that usually extends from the stick to the stile of the window-casing, and which is used for the purpose of returning the shade to normal position, is dispensed with, as my improved guard device takes to some extent the place of the same and renders it unnecessary.
The tassel or ring-pull E below the stick I) can be dispensed with and the loop D used for taking hold of the shade in raising or lowering the same, so that the shade attachment 0 is still more simplified.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a window-shade and spring-roller, of a guard-piece attached to the window-casing above the spring-roller and adapted to extend around the front to the lower part of the same, and a loop attached my invention I have signed my name in presto the stick at the lower end of the shade, said ence of two subscribing witnesses. 100p being adapted to engage with the lower 1 Q J I end of the guard device for preventing the LUMA T FELIX overwinding of the shade under the action of \Yitnesses: the spring-roller, substantially as set forth. PAUL GOEPEL,
i In testimony that I claim the foregoing as l GEO. J AEKEL.
