SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,654, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed April 8, 1896. Serial No. 586,646. (No model.)

To all who/11, it may concern:

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM O. BUNCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oberlin, county of Lorain, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Irrigators, of which Ihereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in instruments for vaginal irrigation for surgical purposes; and the object of the invention is to provide means for distending the folded membranous walls of the vagina at the time of irrigation, so that medicinal or cleansing fluids may reach every portion thereof.

The instrument is used in connection with a syringe.

My invention consists in the perforated ir-,

ligating-tube and distending blades adjacent thereto with means for separating the blades, and in the details of construction and combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and more specifically pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View. Fig. 3 is a plan view with the blades removed.

In the figures, 1 represents the sprayingtube, perforated at 2 at the extremity and enlarged at 3 by the conical section 4. Outside this tube is sleeved the tube 5, which is increased in size at the outer extremity or head 6 to permit the addition of the lugs 7, which are turned inwardly at the tips 8 to secure the wedge-shaped bases 9, in which are inserted the wire blades 10. Normally the outer sleeve is placed so that the inner inclined faces of the bases 9 engage the surface of the cone, and as soon as the inner tube is pushed outward the cone will separate the wedge-shaped bases and expand the blades.

The wedge-shaped bases, as seen in dotted lines, will roll upon the fulcrum-points of the inwardly-turned tips of the lugs 7, and are restored quickly to their normal position by means of the springs 12, secured to the posts 13. Each spring will operate two blade-bases, thus requiring only two posts. A narrow ring 20 upon the inner tube prevents the tubes from separating until the blades are expanded. Projecting

14 and 15 on the inner and outer tubes, respectively, serve to operate the inner tube and force out the blades. The inner tube is provided with an olive-shaped termination 16, upon which to attach the end of a rubber hose. A key in one tube, as at 17, and keyway 18 in the other prevents one tube from twisting in the other.

The advantages of the deviceare obvious, since the instrument is easily expanded after it is placed in position.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In an irrigator for the purpose set forth, in combination, an inner tube provided with a perforated outer extremity, an enlarged inner extremity and conical section connecting the same, an outer tube provided with an enlarged head supporting blade-bases and blades, retaining-lugs upon which said bases fulcrum, return-springs for the bases and blades, and a retaining-ring upon the inner tube adapted to engage said bases when closed about the tube, substantially as described.
