Description

(No Model.) I v R. L. UNDERWOOD.
COMBINED VBNTILATOR AND THIMBLE.
No. 576,635. Patentedfeb. 9,1897
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT L. UNDERWOOD, OF FOSTORIA, OHIO.
COMBINED VENTILATOR AND THIMBLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,635, dated February 9, 1897. Application filed March 5,1896. Serial No. 581,918. (No model.)
1'0 tall whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. UNDERwoon, of Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ventilator and Thimble; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to combined ventilating stovepipe collars and thimbles and its object is to provide a device of simple and improved construction, in which the devices enumerated above are combined in one.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device in position. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional'view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective View of the thimble portion. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the rear side of the collar and ventilator removed from the thimble.
A is the thimble, adapted to be inserted in the pipe-hole and formed with scallop B upon its inner end, whereby, when secured with mortar, the same will spread into the scallops and make a secure hold. This means for securingis more especially adapted for use when the thimble is applied to new chimneys, during their construction or after completion. The thimble may, if desiredybe secured by keys or wedges, as will be understood. Fitting the outer circular end of the thimble is collar 0, thesame being of proper size to accommodate stove or other pipe D. The collar is secured to the thimble by bolts E, which pass through lugs F, extended at right angles from the end of the thimble A. The collar is secured to the wall in proper position over the pipe-hole by screws 0, extended through perforated ears 0 of collar 0. The sloping wall of the collar is formed with ventilatingopenings G, and encircling the collar is the reciprocating ring-damper H, adapted to either open or close the ventilating-openings, as desired. The outer edge of damperH has elongated notches I, and pins J extend thereinto from the collar, and thus the movement of the damper is limited, so that when moved as far as possible in one direction the ventilator is closed, and when in the opposite position the same is opened. Ohaius'K depend from the damper within easy reach for the purpose of conveniently opening or closing the same.
The base-flange L of the collar constitutes the base or rest upon the damper-turns, and the latter fits snugly over the inclined surface of the collar, and hence all the parts are com bined and secured in a most compact manner.
This combined device avoids the use and expense of the usual ornamental collar and is always in position for the reception of the stovepipe and for holding it in place. When the ventilator is open, obnoxious air and gases in the room are afforded outward passage between the thilnble and stovepipe, and the tendency to flow outward is accelerated by the suction caused by the upward draft from the fire.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the outwardly-tapering collar having ventilating-openings, a ring tapering in form to fit the outer side of and surround the collar, said ring being formed with openings to correspond with the ventilating-openings of the collar and also formed upon its outer edge with elongated notches I, and pins J projected from the outer smaller end of the collar into the said notches I, for holding the ring from. displacement on the collar and limiting its movement, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the on twardly-tapering collar adapted to be secured to position, and at its outer end formed with the cylindrical flange L, ring H of tapering form and adapted to fit and encircle the outer side of the collar, the outer end of the tapering ring formed with the cylindrical flange which encircles flange L of the collar, the said ringflange being formed with elongated notches, and pins J projected outward from flange L into said slots of the ring-flange, whereby the reciprocal movement of the ring is governed and the same is also held from'displacement upon the collar, the collar and ring being formed with openings which are adapted to register, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the thiinble, the outwardly-tapering collar and damper-ring, the ring surrounding the collar, devices for holding the damper in place upon the collar and which devices also limit the reciprocal movement of the damper, and the converging 1o flanges projected outward from the thiinble and having the convergence at the inner side of the collar, and to which the said collar is secured, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ROBERT L. UNDERWOOD.
