SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,315, dated February 2, 1897.

Be it known that I, AMZI O. I-IooroN, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of Bridge, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ShadingPens, of which the following is a specification, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to shading-pens; and

the object thereof is to'provide an improved device of this class which is automatic in operation and also simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, while being well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved shading-pen, and Fig. 2 a sectional side view thereof at right angles to that of Fig. 1.

In the practice of my invention I provide a combined reservoir and holder 5, one end of which is provided with a reduced screwthreaded extension 6, on which is mounted a screw-threaded cap 7, and a small air-vent 8 is formed in the extension 6,which is adapted to be closed by said cap.

The opposite end of the reservoir and holder 5 is provided with a screw-thread at 9, and connected therewith is a penholder10,which is circular at its inner end and provided with a circular screw-threaded extension 11, by which it is connected with the reservoir and holder 5, and at the outer end of which is formed an inwardly-directed annular shoulder 12.

The penholder 10 is contracted outwardly on its opposite sides and brought to a point, as shown at 13, and the edges thereof are widened as the sides are contracted, the outer end being wider than the inner end, as shown in Fig. 1, and said outer end is provided with a narrow slot or opening through which the pen projects, at each side of which are inwardly-directed flanges or shoulders 15.

The pen 16 is triangular in form, the base thereof being directed outwardly, and the Serial No. 595,422. (No modelJ corners are cut away, so as to abut against the flanges or shoulders 15, whereby the pen is prevented from protruding through the slot let to a greater extent than desired, and secured to the inner end of the pen is a screwtbreaded rod 17, on which is mounted a nut 18, and mounted on said rod between said nut and the annular shoulder 12 is a spring 19,which operates to force the pen outwardly and to hold each in the required position.

In operation the combined reservoir and holder 5 is filled with ink by removing the cap 7, and in employing the pen for shading purposes the projecting part thereof is placed upon the surface to be shaded, and by slightly pressing thereon the pen will be forced inwardly against the operation of the spring .19 and the required amount of ink will flow out at the sides of the pen.

It will be understood that the pen and its holder may be made of any desired width, and by means of the nut 18 the pressure of the spring 19 may be regulated to any desired extent, and in operation it will be necessary to partly unscrew the cap 7, so as to allow air to enter at the air-vent 8.

My improved pen is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and may also be made of any desired material.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a shading-pen, the combination with a reservoir and holder, of a penholder detachably connected therewith, the outer end of which is flattened and provided with a slot or opening, and a spring-operated pen mounted in said holder, and adapted to be projected through the slot or opening, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a shading-pen, the combination with a reservoir and holder, of a penholder detaehably connected therewith, the outer end of which is flattened and provided with a slot or opening, and a spring-operated pen mounted in said holder, and adapted to be projected through the slot or opening, said holder being provided at the opposite edges of the slot with inwardly-directed shoulders or flanges, and the outer end of said pen being beveled and adapted to strike against said shoulders or flanges, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a shading-pen, the combination with areservoir and holder, of a 'penholder detachably connected therewith, the outer end of which is flattened and provided with a slot or opening, and a spring-operated pen mounted in said holder, and adapted to be projected through the slot or opening, said holder being provided at the opposite edges of the slot with inwardly-directed shoulders or flanges, and the outer end of said pen being beveled and adapted to strike against said shoulders or flan ges, and the end of the reservoir or holder opposite the penholder being provided With a reduced screw-threaded extension, in which is formed an air-vent, and a cap which is adapted to be mounted thereon, and by Which the air-vent may be closed, substantially as shown and described.
