Be it known that I, ISAAC MOORE, of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Copying- Books, of which the following, taken in 0011- nection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to memorandum or copying books, and the object is. to provide means whereby the carbon-leaf, together with its holding-frame, may be adjusted or moved toward and from the bound edges of the momorandum-leaves.

I 5 To this end my invention consists in the combinatiomwith a cover and a series of memorandum-leaves bound together at one side and secured to the cover, of a rectangular frame hinged to the cover and carrying a carbon-sheet clamp, and means for changing the size of the said frame to allow the carbonsheet clamp to be moved toward and from the hinged ends or side of the frame; and my invention consists in certain other combinations 2 5 of parts hereinafter described, and specifically set forth in the claims.

In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the inner side of the open 0 cover. Fig. 2 shows the lower edge view of the same. Fig. 3 shows the blank for the clamp before it is bent to proper shape. Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of the swing ing frame for holding the carbon-sheet, the

3 5 same being shown in avertieal position hinged to the cover, parts of said frame being shown in section to expose the coiled springs in its sides. Fig. 5 is an enlarged end view of the swinging frame with only a small portion of 0 the cover attached, and Fig. 6 is a modification.

Referring specifically to the drawings, A represents the cover, formed of two stiff sides with a flexible back or hinge between the 5 sides, and a C6 are pockets for the usual index or tally sheet. (Not shown.)

B is a tablet or block of leaves, (indicated by dotted lines,) consisting of originals, duplicates, and stubs, as usual. The stubs are preferably bound together by staples or other suit-able means.

In order to secure the tablet in and to the cover, I provide a spring-clamp O, the blank of which appears as shown in Fig. 3 after it is stamped out and before it is bent to shape as shown in Fig. 2. Said clamp has substantially a C shape in cross-section, with a pair of ears 76 h or projections at each end by which it is secured to the inner side of the cover A, near the back or flexible part. The stubs are inserted between the edges 6 e of the said clamp, with the staples or rivets 0 within the clamp, so that it will be quite impossible to withdraw the stubs without sliding them endwise from the clamp. The clamp O is secured to the cover by a pair of rivets ff.

At the right-hand side of the cover, on the inner side thereof and near the corners, are a pair of rectangular pieces 9 g, riveted to the cover and containing eyes for the rivets to pass through, upon which the frame E for the carbon-sheet D swings.

The swinging carbon-sheet frame E has three sides, one of which lies parallel with the C-shaped clamp G and in proximity thereto when the frame is lowered to its position upon the memorandum-leaves. The ends of the rod or wire forming the said side are bent at right angles to the side and enter the ends of small tubes d d, which are bifurcated at their opposite ends to receive the upright ends ofthe pieces g g, to which they are pivoted by means of rivets. force the same out more or less to extend the frame. The movements of the bent portion of the frame are limited by means of slots 2' I; in the portions lying within the tubes and pins it extending through the tubes and entering the slots, as shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings. This figure shows the frame extended or forced outward, so that the clamp for the carbon-sheet will lie nearer the bound end of the tablet. When, however, it becomes necessary to move the carbon-sheet clamp farther from the end or clamp Oas, for instance, when the stub is to be made wider the bent portion of the frame is forced into the tubes away from said end.

The carbon-sheet D (indicated by broken lines in Figs. at and 5) is held at one side between the side of the frame E and U-shaped cap 7c,which is pivoted at one end to the corn er of the frame. The said cap extends the entire length of the side of the frame E, lying parallel with the tablet-clamp, and is shown open in Fig. 4 of the drawings. By this swinging frame the carbon-sheet may be easily and readily removed from and inserted between the original and duplicate, as desired.

I do not desire to be confined to the exact form of frame shown, as it may be Varied somewhat-in shape, depending upon the shape or form of the cover.

The frame may be suspended at the top or lower edge of the cover instead of at the side shown, and the springs l) b may be located on the outside of the frame instead of within the tubes (1, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a copying-book, the combination with a cover, a series of memorandum-leaves bound together and held in said cover, and the carbon-sheet, of a frame hinged to the cover, and a clamp for the carbon-sheet on one side of the frame, said frame having extensible sides for moving the carbon-sheet toward and from the hinged ends of the frame, as and for the purpose described.

2. In a copyi11g-book,tl1e combination with a cover, a series of memorandum-leaves bound together and held by a clamp to said cover, and the carbon-sheet, of a swinging rectangular frame pivoted to the cover, and a clamp on the free side of the frame to hold the carbon-sheet, said frame having tubular and extensible sides whereby the clamp for the carbon-sheet may be moved to different distances from the pivotal points of the frame, as set forth.

3. In a copying-book, the combination with a cover, a series of memorandum-leaves bound together and held in said cover, and a carbonsheet, of a swinging rectangular frame, having three sides hinged at its ends to the cover, a clamp for the carbon-sheet on the free side of the said frame, the other sides of the frame being extensible and comprising tubular parts and solid parts movable in the tubular parts, as set forth.

4. In a copying-book, the combination with a cover, a series of memorandum-leaves bound together and held in said cover, and a carbonsheet, of a pair of tubes hinged to the cover, a rectangular rod extending between the said tubes and having its ends entering the tubes to slide therein, slots in the ends of the rod, pins passing through the sides of the tubes and entering the slots to form stops, and springs within the tubes to move the parts within the tubes, as set forth.-

5. In a copying-book, the combination with a cover, a series of memorand rim-leaves bound together and held in said cover, and a carbonsheet, of a pair of tubes hinged to the cover, a rectangular rod extending between'the said tubes and having its ends entering the tubes to slide therein, coiled springs to operate the parts, and a hinged clamp to engage the central portion of the rod extending between the tubes to secure the edge of the carbon-sheet, substantially as described and shown.
