GERI-IARD VEIS, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
DEVICE FOR REGULATING POSITION OF ARMS 0F VIOLIN-PLAYERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,796, dated January 26, 1897.
Application filed December 16, 1895. Serial No. 572,361. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may conccrn' Be it known that I, GERHARD WEIs, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at C0- penhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Regulating the Position of the Arms of Violin-Players; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as .will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the present invention is to assist the pupil in the correct carrying or handling of the bow in the playing of the violin. I11 order to obtain this, it is necessary to keep the upper arm quiet and in acertain position against the body, in order to obtain which several means have been proposed. Among other things has been tried the method of binding the upper arm to the body or of keeping a book or a brush between the arm or the body, but all have proved inadequate. The present invention is based on a similar principleviz. to call forth an inclination on the part of the player to keep the upper arm against the bodyand this is done by means of a box, the lid of which is attached to the box by hinges, and is kept open and pressed outward by means of a spring.
In the accompanying drawings is shown, in Figure 1, a person holding the appliance in the position in which it is intended to be used. It consists of a box A with lid B, as shown in Fig. 2, in which the box is shown open. On the inner side of the lid of the box is attached, by
means of small hooks, a spiral spring D, the other end of which holds a little plate E, which can be held in a cavity in the bottom of the box by means of several hooks As shown in Fig. 2, there are two cavities F in the bottom of the box with corresponding hooks, so that the position of the spiral spring can be changed, thereby giving a different degree of pressure.
Through straps H the appliance is attached to-the body, as shown in Fig. 1. The box can of course have any desirable form, as also the spring. The effect of the appliance is that the spring always tends to open the lid, so that the player is forced to keep the upper arm against it, whereby the correct position is obtained.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is An arm-support for violin-players consisting of a box with a hinged lid provided on its interior with a spring one end of which is secured to the box and the other free end having attached thereto a plate, the lid of the box having cavities in either of which the free end of the spring may be adjusted by means of the plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GERHARD WEIS.
