To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB R. VINTERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olinton, in the county of Henry and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recoil-Pads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to an improved shoulder recoil-pad; and it' has for its object the production of a pad designed to be secured to the arm of a person in such position that the pneumatic cushion on the pad will partially overlie the shoulder and prevent the jarring incident to the discharge of the gun.

The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a broken perspective View showing my improved pad in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the pad.

Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the base of the pad, having side flaps 1, the base and side flaps being preferably made of a single piece of sheet-rubben. The lower end of the base is formed with an upward curve 2, as shown, for a purpose hereinafter described. To the upper and lower corner of each side flap are secured the fastening devices, consisting on one side of straps 3, having a series of holes 4, and on the other side of short strips 5, each having a button 6, as shown.

B represents the pneumatic cushion, which is centrally secured on the base A, extending the entire length of the latter. This cushion may be made of any suitable material, and is inflated when desired for use through a valved port 7, which latter also serves to permit the escape of the air when the pad is not desired for use.

The pad is secured to the arm of the user near the shoulder, the side flaps fitting snugly around the arm and the straps and buttons fastening'the pad firmly. The upper end of the base A, which extends some distance beyond the edge of the side flaps, will partially overlie the shoulder, in which position the butt of the gun-stock will bear directly against the cushion, thus preventing the jar of the gun in being fired from reaching the shoulder.

As the pad is designed to be worn on the arm of a person continuously while gunning, whether in actual use or not, and also as the pad must occupy substantially the position shown in Fig. 1, it is evident some means must be employed to prevent the pad from interfering with the free movement of the arm- 'muscles. Otherwise the pad could not be continuously worn. This object I accomplish by forming the lower end of the base with an upward curve, which prevents the above-mentioned interfering with the muscles, as they will play beneath and in the curve 2, as will be evident. p

I am aware that heretofore recoil-pads have been constructed for application to the butt of a gun-stock; but I am not aware that any one has heretofore constructed a pneumatic pad applicable to the shoulder of a person. The advantage of this construction is that while in use the pneumatic cushion is not liable to abrasion or puncture, which is an objectionable feature of gun-stock pads.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A shoulder recoil-pad having a base provided with means for securing the same to the arm of a person, and a pneumatic cushion secured to the base, the lower end of the base being formed with an upward curve, as and for the purposes stated.

2. As an article of manufacture, a recoilpad having a base and side flaps made of a single piece, fastening devices secured to the sidefiaps, and a pneumatic cushion secured tothe base, the lower end of the base being formed with an upward curve.
