SELF-LEVELING GRADUATING MEASURING-GLASS AND HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,033, dated January 12, 1897.

Beit known that I, J AMES IILEHMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Self-Leveling Graduating Measuring-Glass and Holder, of which the following is a speoification.

My invention relates to graduating measuring-glasses employed by druggists in determining the correct quantity of fluid ingredients in compounding prescriptions.

Heretofore graduating-glasses have been constructed with a foot or projecting base integral with the glass and serving to support the same in an upright position when resting on a table or counter. The foot or base being of glass is often broken off in use, and when this occurs the instrument for many purposes is rendered unserviceable; and in the accurate measurements of quantity the instrumentmust rest upon aperfectly level surface, which is not always available.

The object of the present invention is to furnish a graduating measuring-glass free from the objections above mentioned and which will be self-leveling.

The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a View in elevation of my graduating measuring-glass and its holder, and Fig. 2 a similar view at right angles to Fig. 1.

In both views the same numerals are used to indicate the same parts.

Referring to the drawings, 3 indicates a stand or holder comprising an extended fiat base or foot 5and a pedestal 5 from the top of which rise a pair of standards 4, which curve outwardly from the pedestal and are provided at their tops with the inwardly-extending parts 6, the top surfaces of which are formed with knife-edges, as shown best in Fig. 2. The

stand 3 will preferably be made of metal, and its base 5 will be sufficiently heavy to firmly sustain the stand in an upright position.

The measuring-glass 7, which tapers to a point, or to such an extent as not to be adapted to stand safely on its own bottom, is'provided, as shown, with the usual graduations and has an outwardly-curved lip and a spout 8. I11 addition, I form the glass 7, in the process of making the same, with the ears or lugs 9, having in their bottom grooves or slots 10, preferably inverted-V shaped, whose bottom surfaces are curved or rounding, as shown clearly in Fig. 2.

The measuring-glass 7 is adapted to be supported by the lugs 9 upon the knife-edges 6 of the standards 4 of the stand, as shown in the drawings, and when placed in the supporting-stand it will assume and maintain a perpendic ular position, whether the stand 3 rests upon a perfectly level surface or not. Aside from the advantages incident to the employment of a measuring-glass and stand constructed as explained there is an advantage in having a fixture for the glass when not in use where it is protected from breakage and may always be found when needed.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a druggists or similar glass having inverted-V-shaped lugs 011 opposite sides near its top, and a base and pedestal with standards the ends of which bend inward and engage said lugs from the lower side, whereby the glass takes a vertical position, and is free to be lifted from the standards.

2. The combination of a graduated druggists or similar glass tapering to a point at itsLlower end, inverted-V-shaped lugs near the top of the glass, and a base with standards engaging the lugs, whereby the glass hangs freely, and is free to be lifted from the standards.
