Nrrnn STATES LOUIS DESMARAIS, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
SPIRIT-LEVEL'.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 650,7 51 dated May 29,1900. Application filed November 15, 1899. Serial No. 737.110. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs DnsMARAIs, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough oi' Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spirit-Level, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in spirit-levelsand plu mb-rules; and th'e object is to provide a device of this character that shall be of simple construction and so arranged that it may be easily taken apartfor repairs or other purposes and as easily assembled or put together.
I will describe a spirit-level embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part ot this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a level embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 shows the device as arranged for a plumb-rule.
The device comprises a body portion 1, of wood or other suitable material, having straight parallel sides, as is usual in these instruments. Seated in an opening 2, formed through the body portion, is a metal tube 3 for holding the 'glass 4 for the bulb. The
bulb-glass is here shown as having its endsV extended into plaster or other sealing material 5, placed in opposite outward openings in the side walls of the tube. By this construction a new tube may be easily inserted in an old tube or ring 3 by removing the plaster,.
putting in the bulb-tube, and then placing in new plaster. Of course in inserting the new bulb-tube in a new ring 3 the same operation takes place, except that there is no old plaster to remove.
The openings in the side walls of the tube 3 completely surround the side sight-opening and are unobstructed, as shown best in Fig. 3, so that the bulb-tube may be placed at the bottom or on any side ofthe said sightopening, or two tubes of suit-able size may be inserted, one extending at right angles to the other.
The tube or holder 3 has an inner iiange 6, adapted to engage with an inner shoulder '7, formed in the wall of the opening through the body portion. As a means for removably holding the part 3 in place I have here shown screw-bolts 8, which at one end have washers 9`for engaging with the flange 6, and at the opposite end the screw-bolts are engaged by nuts'l 10. After the device is secured in place, as above described, ring-plates 11 l2 maybe attached to the body portion at opposite sides, as clearly shown in the drawings. The bulbtube may be placed lengthwise of the body portion when the device is to be used as a spirit-level, or it may be placed transversely of the body portion when the device is to be usedas aplumb-rule, as shown in Fig. 5, and obviously two or more of the tubes 4 may be placed in a single body portion, so that one tool will serve both as aleveling and a plumbing instrument.
Forconvenienoe a sight-hole may be formed through the top of the body portion of the level and through the upper wall ofthe tube 3, as shown in the drawings, so that the bulb maybe seen from the top when it is not practical to see it from either side.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent- A leveling or plumbing instrument, consisting of a body portion having an opening therethrough, a tube arranged to t in said opening and formed with a central sight-opening and uninterrupted openings in its side walls which completely surround said sightopening, a bulb-tube inserted in the openings in the side walls, and cement filling up said side-wall openings, as and forthe purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS DESMARAIS.
