SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 575,018, dated January 12, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED W. WENTwoETH,

a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parcel-Carriers for Bicycles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide a self-adjustable and detachable parcel-carrier for bicycles, of simple, strong, and durable construction and easily handled.

The invention consists in the improved parcel carrier, its self adjustable springclamps and fastening-clips, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the head and handlebar of a bicycle provided with my improved parcel-carrier; Fig. 2, an enlarged side elevation of the carrier and its fastening-clip, the handle-bar being shown in section; Fig. 3, a top plan view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4: a detail View illustrating a slight modification of the fastening-clip.

In said drawings, a represents the head, and b the handle-bar, of a bicycle. On each side of the center of the said handle-bar are removably secured, by means of the clips cl, the spring-clamps 0, adapted to receive the parcel e, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The clip cl is preferably made in two sections f and g, having the central portions curved to conform to the shape of the handle-bar and provided at the sides with horizontally projecting flanges f f and 9 respectively. The flanges f and g are adapted to receive a tightening-screw h, by means of which they are drawn together to thus clamp the sections f and g to the handle-bar. The flanges f and g are each provided with an elongated slot f which slots are penetrated by the clamp c. The clamp is made of one continuous strip of spring metal-preferably flat-and bears approximately at its center on the handle-bar b, and with the shoulders c and 0 formed 011 said clamp, against the flanges f and g of the sectional clip f and g, as clearly shown at 0 in Figs. 2 and 4. The extending portions 0' and c of said clamp are substantially horseshoe-shaped and have their free ends drawn together and bent outward, as at c and 0 respectively.

In Fig. at of the drawings the curved portions of the clip are substituted by the angularly-arranged straight portions f f and g 9 respectively, by which arrangement a certain spring-power is given to the said clip, and the pressure of the flanges f and g against the shoulders c and c is thus greatly increased.

From the foregoing it can be seen that the clamp is securely held in position by means of the flanges f and g and is clamped to the handle-bar by means of their respective sections f and g.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A parcel-carrier for bicycles comprising two substantially horsehoe-shaped springclamps, each of said clamps being provided at or near its center with shoulders and a clip consisting of two polygonal-shaped sections provided with horizontally-arranged flanges, which latter are penetrated by its respective spring-clamp and bear against the shoulders thereof, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.

2. A parcel-carrier for bicycles comprising two spring-clamps, substantially horseshoeshaped, each of said clamps being provided at or near its-center with shoulders, a clip consisting of two sections provided at opposite sides with projecting flanges, the flanges on one side are penetrated by its respective spring-clamp and bear against the shoulders thereof, and a tightening-screw arranged in the flanges on the opposite side, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
