LABEL-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,789, dated January 5, 1897.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. DODGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Label-Holders, of which th following is a specification.
My improvement consists in the construction of a label-holder in which a slip or card bearing marks, figures, or name is placed and locked in a transparent case; and the objects of my invention are to furnish a label-holder which shall be simple, strong, durable, and inexpensive and which shall be so constructed as to effectively protect the slip or card from injury by the weather, and which shall also clearly display both sides of the slip or card.
A still further object of my invention is to produce a label-holder which shall securely hold its card and at the same time permit the card to be readily removed from and replaced in the holder as described.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 represents a view of the labelholder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my holder. Fig. 3 represents a view of the card to be inserted.

In my drawings, A represents the body of my label-holder. It is made of glass and may be made of some other suitable transparent material. It is preferably of the shape as indicated in my drawings. From an aperture a at one end in the body of my label-holder runs a hollow space at, preferably of the shape as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of my drawings, extending nearly to the whole length of my label-holder. Within this hollow space, close to the aperture a, is the groove 17. At one end of the body of my label-holder opposite the aperture a is the perforation c.
Fig. 3 represents a slip or card 13, made of any suitable material, upon which names or characters are written or indicated on either or both sides. This card B is of such size that it will fit into the hollow space of my labelholder A, so that after the same is placed therein aperture a can be closed or sealed by means of wax or any other suitable material. The perforation 0 serves to fasten my label-holder by means of a Wire, a string, a nail, or any other suitable device to the object to be labeled or marked.
It will be readily seen that my label-holder is especially devised for marking trees,shrubs, and plants of all kinds, although I do not intend to confine my invention to any particular object, and I know of no label-holder now known and in use which answers this purpose in as satisfactoryand simple a manner. The label-card can be read on both sides, has a perfect protection from the effects of the weather, can be easily changed as occasion requires, and presents a neat and pleasing appearance.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a label-holder the body A, provided with aperture a, the hollow space as, the groove 19 and the perforation c, all in combination with a card B inclosed in space 09, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
