CHECK HOLDING AND DISTRIBUTING DEVICE. No. 574,655.
Patented Jan. 5, 1897.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDSON \V. BEEMAN, OF ALBANY, OREGON.
CHECK HOLDING AND DISTRIBUTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,655, dated January 5, 1897.
Application filed May 19, 1896- Serial No. 592,152. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDSON W. BEEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Linn and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Check Holding and Distributing Case, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to check or ticket holding and distributing devices adapted particularly for the use of railway-conductors for containing destination or other checks for distribution among passengers, but also adapted for other analogous purposes, as a container for theater and other tickets.
The object of. the invention is to provide a simple construction and arrangement of parts adapting a device of the class named to be readily held in the hand and form a rest for a ticket or card during the inscription thereof by 'the conductor.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following descrip-,
tion, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ticket holding and distributing device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective View, inverted, of the lid, to show the spurs for engaging the uppermost ticket. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of a portion of the device to show the means for holding a card upon the rest.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the body portion of a box or case, which is flared at its upper edge and bent inward to form parallel side guides 2 to re ceive the lateral edges of a sliding lid or cover 3, said lid or cover being provided at its rear end with a downturned stop 4 to limit the forward movement of the lid or cover by coming in contact with the rear end of the body portion of the box or case.
Secured to the lid or cover, parallel with the longitudinal center thereof and spaced slightly aboveits plane, is a guide-rod 5, upon which is mounted a longitudinally-movable slide 6, provided atits front and rear ends with guideeyes fitted upon the rod. The rear guide-eye is formed in an upturned thumb-hold 7 at the rear end of the slide, and a repressing-spring 8 is coiled upon the guide-rod in advance of the foremost eye 9 to normally hold the slide at the limit of its rearward movement.
Carried by the slide and depending through a longitudinal opening 10 in the lid or cover are spu rs l l for engaging the uppermost ticket or check 12, said uppermost ticket or check being in the plane of an outlet or discharge opening 13, formed between the plane of the lid or cover and the contiguous edge of the front wall of the box or case. The tickets or checks are pressed upwardly to maintain the uppermost ticket in contact with the under surface of the lid or cover by means of a spring-actuated supporting or follower plate 14, arranged upon subjacent springs 15,which bear upon the surface of the bottom of the box or case.
A finger-ring 16 is attached to the rear end of the box or case to receive the little finger of the operator, the body of the box or case being grasped in the hand in such a position that the thumb may be pressed against the thumbhold to advance or extend a ticket. The flaring or lateral fianging of the upper edges of the side walls of the box or case forms a stop-rib 17 at the upper edge of the righthand wall, whereby, when the case is held in the left hand and is turned to bring said righthand Wall uppermost, the latter forms a suitable card-rcst upon which the ticket or check may be arranged and held by the thumb. of the operator during the marking of the ticket or check to indicate the destination of a passenger, or other information which it may be necessary to inscribe thereon. The rib prevents the accidental displacement of the ticket or check.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim is- A ticket or card holding and distributing device having a box or case provided with flat side walls, guide-ribs arranged at the upper edges of said side walls and projecting outwardly from the plane thereof, a removable lid or cover carrying ticket or card discharging deviees, and a finger-ring affixed to the rear end of the box or case, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
