Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON J. WHITE, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO SAML. O. VVOODWARD, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-ENGINE OIL-CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,4 1S, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, N. J. WHITE, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usei'ul Improvement in OiLOups, for oiling the valves or" steam-engines while running and the steam-chest is filled with steam, or at any other time; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to 'the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part ot' this speciication.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement ot' two cups, one within the other, with a space, O, between them, the outside cup or casing, A, being attached to the steamcllest in the usual manner. The oil is intro duced through the passage F in the stem Gr into the inside cup, B, which is so arranged that it can be raised or lowered by means of the screw on the stem G, which 'works in the nut a, which covers the outside cup or casin g. When it is sereweddow11.as shown in the drawings, Figure l, it outs oft' the communication between the outside cup and the steam-chest by closing the aperture D, and at the saine time closing the small aperture E in the bottom of the inside cup, B, for the discharge ot' the oil. Vhen the inside cup is raised the steam can pass through the annular space C between the cups to the top ot' the oil in the v inside cup, passing through the small hole c in the top of said cup, the pressure on the top of the oil forcing it through the apertures D and E into the steamchest, or equalizing the pressure above and below the oil, so that the oil will descend by its own gravity, instead of being held suspended by the steam being under the oil only, as in ordinary oil'cups.
l claiml. The arrangement of two cups, one within the other, substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of the cup or casing A, cup B, and apertures D, E, and O, whereby to inject oil or other substance into a steam-chest or other part occupied by steam, through the same aperture by which the steam is taken to the top ot' the oil or other substance.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin g witnesses.
NELSON J. WHITE.
