FASTENlNG-EUTTON FOR GLOVES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,550, dated December 22, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, J ULIUs STEINBERGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening-Buttons for Gloves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

This invention relates to a certain new and useful fastening-button for gloves, which consists in the arrangement of parts and details of construction hereinafter fully set forth in the drawings and described and pointed out in the specification.

The object of the invention consists in providing a fastening-button so constructed as to permit of being readily secured to or removed from the glove, so that in case the button is damaged or destroyed another may be quickly inserted in lieu of the broken or damaged one, and which may be adjusted upon the glove so as to permit the wearer thereof to increase or decrease the wristmeasurement of the glove, as required.

In order to fully understand the invention, reference must be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this application, wherein-- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing a portion of a glove with my fastening-button applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View of that portion of the glove to which the fastening-button is attached. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail cross-sectional view showing the position of the parts when the glove is fas tened; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged top plan view of the fastening-button, the same being shown connected to the glove.

In the drawings the letter A is used to indicate the upper or wrist portion of the glove A, and B the flap thereof, to which is attached or secured an ordinary fastening-eyelet B.

To the wrist-section C opposite to the eyelet secured to the flap B are secured, one in advance of the other, a series of metallic thimbles 1 2 3, the upper and the lower edges at 5 of these thimbles being flanged over, so as to grasp the leather of the glove therebetween, in order that the thimbles may not pull out. These thimbles, of which two or more may be employed, are preferably circular in shape and are provided with a square opening a, Fig. 2.

To the wrist-section C is removably secured the fastening-button. This button consists of the circular base-plate C, which plate at its rear portion is cut away, as shown at a, so as to provide an elastic tongue C To this base-plate is connected by hinges b or otherwise the cover or top plate D, which plate corresponds in shape to that of the baseplate C. This cover or top plate is made concavo-convex, Fig. 3, and when closed is held firmly down by the pressure of the elastic tongue C of the base-plate, which tongue bears or impinges against the lower edge of the cover or top D. This style of springs for holding the cover or top down is preferred, owing to its simplicity, it being integral with the base-plate, although any suitable form of springs may be employed for this purpose.

The base-plate C is provided near its outer edge with the hollow stud E, which projects above and below the said base-plate. The upper projecting portion of the stud is made round in order that the eyelet B of the flapsection B of the glove may fit thereover, and the inner face thereof is slightly cut away in order to provide an enlarged head 6, which head prevents the eyelet from slipping off the stud E. The-lower projecting portion of the stud E is made square, so as to fit within the square opening of the thimbles 1, 2, and 3. Inasmuch as the lower portion of the stud is square and fits within a square opening of the thimbles, the base-plate C is prevented from turning or revolving and the button is thus held rigid.

The lower end of the stud or stem E, when fitted within the thimble 1, 2, or 3, comes flush with the lower edge of the said thimble. The hollow stud is provided with internal screwthreads cl, and into the hollow stud screws the screw-threaded stem E. This stem upwardly projects from the disk E which answers as a cover for the lower end of the thimble into which the stud is fitted.

My fastening-button is secured to the glove by first inserting the downwardly-projecting stud within either of the thimbles-say thimble 1. the disk E is screwed into the hollow stud,

After the stud is in place the stem of ICO which draws the button down firmly upon the glove. After the button has been secured to the glove it is only necessary, in order to fasten the sections of the glove, that the cover or top D be raised, as shown by dotted lines, Fig. 3, and the eyelet B be placed over the upwardly-projecting end of the stud E. The

cover or top D is then closed down upon the flap-section of the glove, Fig. 3. \Vhen thus secured, it will be impossible to unclasp the glove without first raising the top or cover and removing the eyelet from the projecting stud.

If the glove is too loose around the wrist with the fastening-button in thimble l, the same may be easily removed byunscrewing the stem E and secured within the thimble 2 or 3, as necessity may require. This adjustable feature of the but-ton is important, for it ofttimes happens that the glove fits properly in all places but about the wrist, which is too loose. Bymybutton this defect is obviated, as the button may be moved forward or backward, as desired.

The size of the base-plate C is such as to completely cover all of the thimbles when the button is secured within the first thimble. \V hen the button is set back, the forward thimble will be exposed when the glove is unfastened, but it is covered by the flap of the glove when fastened.

Inasmuch as my fastening-button is removably secured to the glove, the same, when the glove has become worn out, may be removed and attached to a new pair of gloves. This permits the owner of the gloves to have individual buttons made of valuable metal, such as gold or silver, or monogram-buttons may be used. In other words, this style of fastening-buttons may be placed upon the market in the same manner as sleeve-buttons or other articles are, and may be secured or fastened to the gloves by the owner thereof. It is not necessary that a different set of buttons be used upon each pair of gloves, for one set will answer for any number of gloves.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure protection in by Letters Patent, is

1. I11 combination with a glove having a thimble secured to the section opposing the flap-section, of a fastening-button, and a device by means of which the button is removably secured to the thimble.

2. In combination with a glove, of the flapsection provided with an eyelet, of a button removably and adjnstably attached to the opposing section of the glove, a hinged cover or top to said button, and a stud covered by said cover or topwhich the eyeletof the flapseotion engages to fasten'the glove.

3. In combination with a glove-fastener, of the flap-section of the glove provided with an eyelet, of a series of thimbles secured to the opposing section of the glove, a fasteningbutton adapted to be secured within the thimbles, and of a device by means of which the button is removably secured to the thimble.

4. In a glove the combination with the flapsection provided with an eyelet, of a fastenin g-button, (for uniting the flap-section to its opposing section,) the top of which covers the eyelet of the flap-section, and means for removably securing the fastening-button to the section of the glove opposing the flap-section.

5. In combination witha glove, of the flapsection provided with an eyelet, of the thimble secured to the opposing section, a fastenin g-button provided with a hinged cover and a base-plate, a hollow internal screw-threaded stud projecting above and below the baseplate, and a screw-threaded stem fitting within the hollow stud and by means of which the button is removably secured to the thimble.

6. In combination with a glove or similar article, of the flap-section, of a series of thimbles secured to the opposing section, a fastening-button adapted to be secured within said thimbles, and of a device by means of which the button is removably secured to the thimbles.

7. In afastening-button for gloves or similar articles the combination with the baseplate, of a hollow internal screw-threaded stud projecting above and below the baseplate, a hinged cover for said base-plate, and of a screw-threaded device connecting with the screw-threaded hollow stud so as to removably secure the fastening-button to the glove.

8. In combination with a glove, of the flapsection provided with an eyelet, of a fastening-button for uniting the flap-section to its opposing section, a movable cover to said button which covers the eyelet of the flapsection, and of means for removably and adjustably securing the fastening-button to the section of the glove opposing the flapsection.
