BEDSIDE SASH LIFT AND LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,267, dated December 15, 1896.

T0 at whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, DONALD FLETCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful device for raising or lowering a window-sash from the bedside in any part of a room, of which the following is a specification.

Figure 1 is a plan of the device, showing one sash 0c and a part of the window-frame, also the drum-box D and winding-drum cl. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the face of the sashplate A. Fig. at is an elevation of the face of the stile-plate B.

a: designates window-sash; y, the pulleystile. Plate A is set into the sash a: flush, having the projecting arms a at the top and bottom. The arms a have holes at the ends through which to run the cords e 0. Plate B is set in flush with the face of the pulleystile and forms a guide for the arms a in the slot 1).

D is a receptacle in which is placed the winding-drum cl. The lid J closes the receptacle and locks the sash a: in any desired position by means of the lug L going between the arms of the handle (1 of the drum cl. This receptacle may be set in any position or in any part of the room or adjoining room. It may also be a removable box or a recess in the wall, as preferred, though the former will generally be more convenient.

To move the sash 00, open the lid J of the receptacle D and turn the drum (1 in the desired direction. To look the sash w in any position, move the same to the position required and close the lid J with the lug L between the arms of the wheel at;

The object of this invention is to provide a means whereby an invalid may control the ventilation and temperature of his room without getting out of his bed, the sash a: being at all times balanced by the weight a, which acts as the weight for one side of the sash.

WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a sash lifting and locking device, the combination of the locking-lug L, with the drum d, handle-wheel d and cords e e, the

said cordsbeing connected to a window-sash substantially as set forth.

2. In a sash lifting and locking device, the combination of the locking-lug L, drum cl handle-wheel d and the cords e e, the cords being connected to a window-sash and concealed within a wall or partition, substantially as set forth.

3. A receptacle provided with a lid J carrying a locking-lug L, in combination with a drum d contained Within the said receptacle and having a handle constructed to be engaged by said lug, and the cords e a winding on saiddrum and connected to a window-' sash substantially as set forth.

4. A receptacle in combination with winding mechanism contained therein, means for locking the said mechanism by the closing of the lid of said receptacle and cords extending to an object to be lifted, whereby the said object may be lifted and locked by concealed devices, substantially as set forth.
