Be 'IJ known that I, IIERMANN FRIEDRIC-I-I WELKE, 21 subject of the King of Prnssia, German Emperor, residing at Hagen, \Vestphalia, in the Kingdo1n of Prussia, Germany, have invented oertain new and nsefn1 I1nprovements in Button-Fasteners, (for whioh Letters Patent were gmnted to me in Germany, No. 78,404, dated February 18, 1894;) and I do hereby deolare the following 110 be a full, e1ear, and exact desoription of the invention, snob as wil1 enab1e others skilled in the art to whieh it appertains to make and nse the sanie.

My inveniion relates 'uo that o1ass of button-fasteners provided with spring-aotnated jaws, one o ho1d the button and the ouher the pin, and whioh are caused to move toward eaoh other to foroe the pin through the Ina terial and form 2L loop therein through the shank of the button.

The invention oonsists, first, in a novel oonstruotion of recess for reoeivng the button, in eo1nbinaton with a spring to rest npon thehead of the button and a spring-actuaued lever-arm aot-ing in conneetion with the spring whereby the button is firrnly held in proper position re1ative to the pin.

IIJ further oonsists in so eonnecting the 1e ver-arm and its aotnating-spring with the device that said spring shell not to normally 1101d the jaws open f0r aotion.

It further oonsists in oertain nove1 featnres in the oonstrnotion and arrange1nents of par'os, a11 as hereinafter described.

In the aeoompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the jaws with a part of ;he handles broken away, taken from the side to show the kook-arm with the jaws in their open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jaws o1osed with the end of the jaws in seotion. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1, taken from the opposite sicle. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the spring-plate 'or holding the pin. The jaws A A and handles B B may be of any nsnal or preferred eonfignration, exoept in the partieulars hereinafter referred to.

The forward end of the jaw A, whioh reoeives the button, consists of a donble-siaepped portion a 0,, with the forward faee beveling or inclining inward with the reoess or socket b, wheh gnides and for1ns the pin into 100pfor1n, looated in rear of The faoe or sfsepped portion a.

Conneoted to the forward faoe of the jaw A is a spring-plate d, whioh overhangs the stepped portion a and orms, in oonneotion with the face of the stepped portion, a oavity for reoeiving the head of the button.

Pimtally oonneeted to the side of the jaw A is a lever-arm 0, With its forward end bent at an angle to overhang the face of the spring plate d. By this constrnction and arrangement it will be seen that the pin can be readily put in p1ace and that as soon as the action is commenced the spring Wil1 immediately act and firmly grip the head of the pin. This arrangement a1so facilitates the remova1 of the goeds from the jaws after the button has been applied, as when the jaws are opened after app1ying the button the hook-arm G again engages the spring and forces it away from the jaw.

The device may be connected to a standard II by an adjustable pivotal connection H, which may in turn be mounted in a base II which may be connected te the work-bench, the arrangement of parts permitting the device to be adjusted vertically to change its height relative to the tab1e or its oscillation re1ative to the base.

Having n0w described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a device for connecting buttons 0 articles, the combination With the jaw for holding the button, a recess to receive the button, a concavity formed in said jaw te form or guide the pin, a spring t0 rest upon the head of the button and a spring-actuated lever-arm acting in connectionwith the spring substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a device for connecting buttons te articles, a spring t0 engage the head of the button, a lever-arm having a forward extension te engage the spring, a spring connected te said lever-arm and to the operating-handles, and acting snbstantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a device 'or connecting buttons te articles, the pin-holding jaw, a recess formed therein having a ccncave face, a spring-plate te held the pin arranged over said recess, an arm to play in said recess, and connected With the opposite jaw, substantially as described whereby t0 automatically contro1 the tension of the spring as set forth.
