SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,773, dated December 8, 1896.

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE ROCKWELL, a

citizen of the United States, residing at Bainbridge, in the county of Chenango and State provide a swing that is light and strong and easily taken apart and packed for shipment.

In carrying out my invention I provide adjustable suspending rods or tubes and pivots for connecting the same to a platform and to side bars carrying the .adjustable seat and back, the parts occupying a horizontal position in the act of swinging. The seat and back are adjustable independently of the other moving parts, and the pivots are of such a nature as to serve also for clampin g the rods or tubes. The details are hereinafter more particularly described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents my improvement by a side elevation. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the same7 and Fig. 3 aseo-- tional plan of one of the pivots.

The platform consists of the frame-pieces a and the cross-slats a', connecting the same, and these parts are suspended from any desired overhead point by rods b b. The framepieces have connected to them pivots 1, 2, and 5, the rods b b being secured to the pivots 1 and2, and a rod CZ is connected to the pivot and to a pivot 4 at its upper end, and said pivot 4 and a pivot 3, connected to the rod o', are secured to the side bar c. These parts are duplicated upon the two sides of the swing.

' These pivots each consist of the following parts: A socket l0, through which passes either of the rods b, b', or d. A plate 12, having a collar 13, receives a circular hub upon one side of the socket lO, and said plate l2 is secured by screws in place either upon the frame-pieces a or the side bars c, and a tap-bolt 14 passes through the plate 12 and through the socket l0 and its circular hub,

and the end .of said bolt bears against the tube or rod b, b', or d to clamp the same to the socket 10, and the bolt-head is adjacent to the rear surface of the plate 12, a recess being made to receive the head of the bolt 14 whereever the same comes.

The seat is composed of the side pieces e and the slats e', that extend from one side piece to the other. The back is composed of the side pieces t' and the slats 7l', that extend across from one side piece i to the other, and the seat and back are pivoted together at S. The seat is pivoted to the side bars o by the pivots 9, and said lpivots also carry the links e3, that extend therefrom up to the arms e2, and said arms e2 are connected by pivot-pins 11 to the side pieces t' of the back.

Sectors f are pivoted at their upper ends to the side pieces 'i of the back and to the side bars c at G, and their lower curved ends are slotted, and clamping-nuts 7, passing through the side bars c, also extend through said slotted ends, so as to clamp the sectors in place. In this manner the seat is supported by the pivots 9 to the side bars c, and its position is maintained wherever placed by the sectors j' 75 and their connections at 6 and 7 to said side bars c, which position is shown in full lines in Fig. l and in an inclined position in the dotted lines in the same ligure. The relative positions of the seat and back to each other and to the side bars c are maintained and firmly held after adjustment by the sector and its clamping devices regardless of the swinging movement of the platform and the side bars c, and said platform and side bars remain substantially horizontal as the rods b b that suspend the same incline in first one direction and then the other in the swinging operation.

The parts shown in the drawings may be suspended in doors from rafters or other suitable frames or out of doors by any suitable framework or support, but the framework, however, forms no necessary part of my invention.

I claim as my inventionl. In a swing, the combination with a seat, of side bars for carrying the seat and means for adj ustably supporting the seat, a platform, suspending-rods, and pivots upon the platform and side bars connected to the rods, said pivots each consisting of a socket through which the rod passes, a plate adapted to be connected to the platform or side bar and having a collar and a bolt passing through said plate and through the socket and bearing against the rod to clamp the socket to the rod and forni a pivot between the socket and plate, substantially as set forth.

2. In a swing, the combination 4with a platform, side bars, pivots connected thereto, and rods connected to said pivots and suspending the platform and side bars, ofaseat and back pivoted together, pivots connecting the side pieces of the seat to the side bars and slotted sectors pivoted to the side pieces of the back and to the side bars and clamping-bolts passing through the side bars and slot of the sectors whereby the adj usted position ofthe seat and back are rigidly held in relation to one another, substantially as set forth.
