SPRING-BED.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,147, dated December 1, 1896. Application led March 18, 1896. Serial No. 533,790. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GILBERT BACON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Antigo, in the county of Langlade and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in beds, and has particular reference to that class thereof whereinis employed a wovenwire bottom.

The objects of my invention are, trst, to obviate the necessity of employing a special frame for the accommodation and support of the woven-wire bottom; secondly, to support said bottom within and by the bedsteadframe; thirdly, to provide such a character of support within the bedstead-frame as will permit of an even tension of any desired degree to be placed upon said bed-bottom, or, in other words, to provide for an adjustment of the bed-bottom whereby any sagging may be compensated for in a convenient manner.

Various other objectsof the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a general plan view of a bedstead, the posts, foot and head boards being shown in section and my invention being in position as when in use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail in plan of one of the head-castings, illustrating its connection with the head-bar -of the bed-bottom. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the aforesaid casting in detail. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of one end of the head-bar. Fig. 5is a transverse sectional view of the head-bar. Fig. 6 is an elevation of one of the foot-castings. Fig. 7 is a detail in perspective of one end of the foot-bar. Fig. 8 is a cross-section of the foot-bar.

Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.

1 designates the two side rails of any ordinary bedstead, 2 the head-board, and 3 the foot-board, the said boards and rails being connected by the usual posts.

To the inner sides of the side rails 1 are secured, by screws or otherwise, what I shall term for convenience as head-castings, the Y same being located adjacent to the headboard 2 of the bedstead, and at the opposite ends or near the foot-board are what I shall term foot-castings 5, the same also being secured by screws or other desired means.

The head-castings, there being two employed, are of rectangular shape and are provided with holes 6 for the accommodation of screws. The inner face of each of these castings is provided with an L-shaped groove 7, the upper and lower walls of which are undercut or beveled, as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2. The front wall of the groove 7 of each of the head-castings is provided with a lateral extension or lip 8, and this lip is perforated and threaded to receive an adjustingbolt 9. Each of the foot-castings is, as shown in Fig. 6, also of rectangular shape and is provided with bolt-holes 10 at suitable points. Between its ends the casting 5 is enlarged or widened, as indicated at 11, and formed in the upper side of this widened portion is a pocket 12 open at its inner side, and,as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6, the wall or edge of the pocket is undercut or beveled.

The foot-bar13 of the bed-bottom comprises upper and lower sections 14 and 15, respectively, and between thesesections is arranged one edge of the woven-wire bed-bottom 16, the same being held in position by means of screws 17, passing through the sections and bed-bottom, or by any other desired means.

Each end of the foot-bar 13 has fitted thereover a cap or casting 18, at the outer end of which is located the beveled lug 19, the same being designed to fit removably into the pockets 12 of the foot-castings 5, and by reason of the beveling or dovetailing of the lugs and the edges of the pockets tov interlock therewith.

The head-bar 2O comprises a main lower section 21, in the front upper edge of which is formed an L-shaped recess 22, in which is seated the remaining section 22. The wovenwire bottom has its remaining edge seated in the L-shaped recess 22 and is surmount-ed by the section 23, the whole being secured together by means of screws passed through the sections and bed-bottom. The ends of the head-bar 2O are provided with caps or IOO castings 24, which are provided on their outer faces with rectangular dovetailed lugs 25, which are designed to be removably seated in the grooves of the head-castings and are entered in the same by introducing them in the front vertical ends of said groove, so that after such introduction they are in position to be borne upon by the adjusting-bolts 9, all as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It will be seen that by simply rotating the bolts 9 by means of an ordinary wrench applied to their heads any slack or looseness in the bedbottom may be readily compensated for and an even tension of said bottom secured. By stretching the bed-bottom into the position shown in Fig. 1 when it is first placed in the bed-frame it will be seen that suflicient play remains within the head-castings to permit of an adjustment'that will be necessary for all time to come.

In order to secure lightness as well as strength, the head-bar is preferably wider at its center than at its ends, thereby adapting it to withstand the naturally greater strain to which it is subjected at this point. The

side bars of the bedstead may likewise be thus formed, if desired.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with the bed-frame,the head-castings4c having the L-shaped recesses, 7, the upper and lower edges of which are undercut, and the laterally-extended perforated lips 8, the bolts 9 threaded therein, the opposite foot-castings 5 having the projection 11 provided with the pockets 12 having undercut edges, of the head and foot bars having heads at their ends and mounted in the pockets and recesses of the castings, and the woven-wire bottom connecting the bars, substantially as specified.

'I he combination with the bed-frame and the head and foot castings, 4 and 5, of the head-bar, 20, comprised in the section 21 having the recess 22 and the section 23, the'footbar 13 comprising the upper and lower sections, 1 i and 15,the woven-wirebottom having its ends clamped by the sections of the two bars, screws passed through the same, lthe caps arranged on the ends of the bars and the bearings on the ends of the caps, substantially as specified.
