Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEO IMPROVEMENT IN BRAI DING-MACHINES.A
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,201, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. SLOAN, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Braidingtlachines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of a spool-carrier with its spool and appendages.
The same letters indicate like parts in all the gures.
In the carriers of braiding-machines as heretot'ore made the thread from the spool passes through a guide attached to the carrier, thence through the eye of a weight which slides on the bar of the carrier, and then up through an eye at the upper end of the carrier-bar to the place where the braiding is done. As the carriers in their winding course alternately and in rapid succession move toward and from the center of the machine, where the threads are braided, the weight which is suspended to the thread between the spool and the braid-to keep the thread under tension must move up and down. The extent ot' the range of motion of this weight up and down leads to the frequent breakage of the thread.
The desideratum is to reduce the range of motion otl the weight. This I have accomplished by myinvention, which consists in combining with the old arrangement heretofore practiced of a guide on the carrier-bar, which receives the thread from the spool, and an eye or guide on the weight around or through which the thread passes on its way to the eye at the top of the carrier, a guide hole or eye, or the equivalent thereof, through which the thread is to pass from the eye or guide on the weight, and a second eye or guide, or the equivalent thereof, on the weight, through or around which the thread passes on its way to the delivery-eye at the top ot' the carrier, by'means of which combi nation I am enabled to reduce the range of motion of the weight to one quarter of the length of slack thread required to be drawn down every time the carrier moves toward the cen ter of the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents the carrier of a braiding-machine of the usual construction, and b the spool of thread, which turns freely on its bearing.
The spool, as usual, has ratchet-teeth on the upper head, c, which are engaged by a catch, d, which slides on the bar e ot' the carrier, so that while this catch is down the spool cannot turn to give out thread, but when lifted the spool is liberated and turns freely to give ont thread.
From the inner face of the carrier-bar c an eye or guide, f, as usual, projects, and through which the thread gfroin the spool passes; and from this it passes down to and around the weltknown guide h, attached to the weight t', which is adapted to slide freely on the bar e of the carrier. From the guide h the thread 4extends up to and through an eye, j, in the bar e, then down through the inside of the weight around a guide, 7c, near the lower end thereof, and thence to the usual delivery-eye Z, at the upper end of the carrier-bar.
By reason of the foregoing combination and arrangement it will be seen that as the carrier moves inward the weight has onlyrto descend a quarter ot' an inch to take up one inch of slack thread, and as the carrier moves out that the weight has only to be lifted a quarter of an inch for every inch of thread which it gives out.
By thus reducing the range of motion of the weight the liability of breaking therthread by jerks is greatly reduced.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The second guide on the carrier-bar and the second guide on the sliding weight, in combination with the tirst guides on the carrier-bar and weight heretofore used, substantially as and for the purpose described.
THOS. J. SLOAN.
