SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 571,762, dated November 24, 1896.

Be it known that I, EDWARD HAYES, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Generators, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in generators of the class set forth in my previous patent-No r-lS),0O2, dated January 3, 1803, and has for its object the production of a device which is particularlysimple in construction and practical in operation; and to this end it consists, essentially, in the construction and arrangement of the component parts of the generator', all as hereinafter more particularly describcthand pointed out in the claims.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like letters indicate corresponding` parts in all the views.
Figure l is a vertical section of my improved generator. Fig. 2 is an elevation of a portion of the eter-containing drum and adjacent upright heads connected thereto. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the connection between the Water-containing drum and one of the upright heads of the generator. Fig. al is a Vertical section, taken on line i e, Fig. Figs. 5 and 6 are respectively elevation and inverted plan of one of the detached nipples or pipes of the connection seen at Figs. 3 and 4;. Figs. 7 and S are respectively clevation and top plan of the other nipple or pipe of said connection, and Fig. is a top plan of the detached coupling of said connection.
A represents the outer shell of my improved generator, which is of any desirable form, size, and construction, and is here shown as composed of brick, although it maybe otherivise formed if desired. This shell preferably consists of top and uprights Walls a a', which maybe provided with suitable ash, fuel, and cleaning doors, not necessary to herein illustrate and describe. A suitable intermediate Wall a2 is interposed between opposite upright Walls Co of the shell A, and the top face or edge of the Wall o2 is considerably separated from the adjacent face of the top Wall a. A combuStien-chamber n.3 and a iirepassage o4 are arranged on opposite sides of the Wall 0.2, and the upright Wall ovl adjacent to the lire-passage is provided With an outlet c, which is arranged in substantially the same horizontal plane as the hase of the combust'ion-chamber and opens into a sinoke-pipe o7. lf desired, the Wall c adjacent to the pipe a7 maybe provided with an upper outlet o8, Which may receive a lateral branch d from the pipe (t7.
li is a Water-containing drum of any desirable construction, arranged at the outer side of the Wall a2 at one side of the combustion-chamber of' and in proximity to the adjacent upright Wall o' and the horizontal plane of the ou tlct o. A pipe li' is connected to the drum l for discharging the return or feed water of the generator thereinto in order that the escaping products oi' combustion may be deprived of theirheat to a maximum degree, but it is obvious that the return or feed water may be admitted by any other suitable part of the generator.
h are upright heads of any desirable construction mounted above the drum B and suitably connected thereto. rThe connection for each of the heads Z) preferably consists of nipples or pipes c c', having their adjacent ends suitably interlocked, and a coupling e2 engaged with said ends. As here illustrated, the end of the nipple or pipe c, engaged by the coupling c2, is provided with annular and longitudinal shoulders cg ci, projecting from its end edge and an annular screw-threaded surface c5, increasing in diameter from said edge. rl"he adjacent end of the nipple or pipe c is formed with annular and longitudinal sockets o6 c7 in its end edge for receiving the shoulders c3 c4, and is provided with an annular screw-threaded surface cs, decreasing in diameter from said edge. The adjacent ends of the surfaces c os are of substantially the same diameter and are normally arranged in close proximity, as clearly seen at Fig. 4. The taper of said surfaces c es is substantially uniform in order that both may be readily engaged by the coupling c2, which is formed With a tapering conical inner periphery c, provided With screw-threads meshing with the threads of the surfaces c5 o8. As the coup` ling c2 is screwed toward the end of the surface c5 of greater diameter, independent revoluble movement of either of the nipples or pipes c c' is prevented by the shoulder c4 and said coupling is secured to the adjacent ends of the nipples or pipes c c with a particularly tight joint. The described construction of connection for securing the heads c to the drum B is particularly applicable for said purpose, but it is obvious that any other suitable connection may be used, if desired.
D are suitable heating-coils proj ectin glaterally from the heads b above the iire-passage a4, the intermediate wall a2, and the combustion-chamber a3, and having their outer or free ends arranged ink proximity to the adjacent upright wall of the case A, which forms one of the side walls of the combustion-chamber. The coils D are usually substantially U-shaped and are preferably arranged one within the other with their opposite branches inclined from each other from their outer ends toward the upright heads b, as the circulation therethrough is greatly facilitated by such arrangement and inclination.
As here illustrated, the coils D are composed of pipes connected together; but bent tubes may be used, if desired. rlhe de scribed construction of coils is particularly applicable for use with this generator, but it will be understood that my invention is not limited thereto.
The products of combustion impi n ge against the free ends of the coils D and then pass over the intermediate wall a2 and through the tire-passage a" to the outlet aG and the pipe ai. In order that the products of combustion may be compelled to rise somewhat above the wall a2, I preferably support a plate CZ above the top face of the wall a2 and extend the saine between the heating-coils projecting from Aad-v jacent upright heads Z1. If desired, this plate may be supported by the wall a2, as illustrated, or it may be suitably engaged with theadjacent heating-coils and it may consist either of a single piece extending lengthwise of the wall a2 and formed with perforations .for the heating-coils .'D or a number of comparatively narrow strips arranged between adjacent series of heating-coils.
E is a steam or hot-water drum arranged beneath the vtop wall a in proximity to the upright wall a arranged opposite to the wall a2 and forming the side wall of the combustion-chamber CL3.
The dru-ni E is connected to the upper ends of lthe head l) by suitable steam or liet-water passages, as pipes e, arranged substantially parallel with the top wall a and having downturned 'ends c', secured by connections of suitable construction. The connections preferably consist of nipples or pipes e2 c3 and couplings e" of substantially the same construction as the corresponding parts c o c2, previously described. The steam or hot water may be withdrawn from the drum E by an outletpipe E' of any desirable construction. A generator of the described construe tion is particularly applicable for use in geir erating steam, but it is equally suitable for Init-water heating, and in that event the heated water is discharged through the pipe E and may be returned through the pipe I3".
The operation of my generator will be readily understood upon reference to the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, and it will be particularly noted :that its heating-coils are free to expand and contract and convey the circulating water in short paths directly above the heated products oi'. combustion, that thesteam or hot water is withdrawn from a drum arranged in its top and connected independently to a sewhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by .1,

In a generator, the combination of an outer shell having top and upright walls, a combustion-chamber arranged in proximity to one upright wall, a water-contaming drum supported in proximity to the opposite uprigh-t wall, upright heads mounted above the water-containing drum and connected thereto, heatingcoils projecting laterally from the heads and arranged with their outer ends above the combustion-chamber in proximity IOO enter shell having top and upright Walls, one

In a generator, the combination of an outer shell having top and upright Walls, one of the upright Walls having an outlet for the products of combustion, a combustion-chamber arranged adjacent to the opposite upright Walls with its base iu substantialljT the saine horizontal plane as the outlet, a Wall inten posed between said upright Walls and formed of less height than the same, a horizontal Water-containing drum arranged adjacent to the outlet, upright heads mounted above the horizontal drum and connected thereto, heatin g-coils projecting laterallj7 from the upright heads above the intermediate wall and the combustion chamber, a drum arranged in proximity to the top Wall and the upright Wall adjacent to the combustion-chamber, and connections between the heads and the steam drum arranged adjacent to the top Wall, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
7 In a generator, the combination of a coinbnstion-chamber, a horizontal Water-containing drum arranged at one side of the combustion-chamber, upright heads mounted above the drum, nipples or pipes projecting from said drum and heads and having their' adjacent ends interlocked and provided with annular screw-threaded surfaces, one of said surfaces decreasing gradually in diameter from its outer end, and the other surface having its outer end of substantially the saine diameter as the adjacent end of the former surface and increasing gradually in diameter toward its opposite end, and a coupling having a tapered screwthreaded inner periphery engaged With said annular surfaces, substantially as and ior the purpose described.
