H. WHITE. PLOW ATTACHMENT.
No. 571.466. Patented Nov. 17, 1896.
UNITED STATES ATENT Enron..
HEDLEY W'HITE, OF MARQUEZ, TEXAS.
PLOW ATTACHNI ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,466, dated November 1'?, 1896.
Application tiled September 4, 1896. Serial No. 604,886. (N0 IIlOdGI- i To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that l, HEDLEY WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marquez, in the county of Leon and State of Texas,
have invented a new anduseful Plow Attachment, of which the followingis aspeciiication. This invention relates to plow attachments, and it has for its object to provide a new and useful guide or gage attachment for plows and cultivators adapted to travel in the furrow and to provide simple and efficient means for guiding and steadying the implement while at work, and also for regulating the depth at which the plow or cultivator shovel shall run in the ground.
lVith these and other objects in view, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
Figure l is a perspective view of a shovelplow equipped with the attachment contemplated by this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the guide or gage foot attachment forming the subject-matter of this application. Fig. 4 is a detail in perspective of the inclined brace-arm used in conjunction with the plow-sh ovel and the heel-bolt thereof, Referring to the accompanying drawings, the numeral l designates an ordinary longitudinally-slotted plow-standard, carrying at its lower end the plow or cultivator shovel 2, that is adj ustably and detachably fastened to the front side of the standard by means of the heel-bolt 3, passed through an opening in the shovel and the slot of the standard and having its rear threaded extremity projecting beyond the rear side of the standard. In conjunction with the heel-bolt 3 for fastening the shovel 2 in place is employed a brace-arm 4, arranged at an angle within the slot of the standard above the bolt 3 and provided at its upper front end with a cross-head 5, engaging at the front side of the standard and binding on the upper edge of the shovel 2. The said inclined brace-arm 4 is provided at its lower rear end with an angularly-disposed perforated bolt-plate G, resting flat against the rear side of the standard l and receiving in the perforation thereof the heelbolt 3. Adapted to be detachably and adjustably clamped against the rearside of the standard over the bolt-plate 6 is a guide or gage foot attachment 7. l
The guide-foot attachment 7 essentially comprises a single casting having a straight rearwardly-disposed slide-bar 8 and a curved securing-plate 9, disposed at an angle to the bar 8 and projected upwardly from the front end thereof. The curved securing-plate 9 of the foot 7 rests flat against the bolt-plate 6 and is provided with a longitudinally-disposed slot 10, receiving the rear threaded extremity of the heel bolt 3, which carries thereon the clamping-nut ll, working against the outer side of the securing-plate 9 to hold the foot 7' stationary in its vertically-adjusted position. The curved securing plate 9 is further provided at its upperand lower ends with the rest-lugs 12, engaging iiat against the rear side of the standard, so as to brace the plate 9 and space it sufficiently from the standard to admit of the bolt-plate 6 lying between these two parts. The upper rest-lug l2 of the securing-plate 9 is provided with a short guide-stud 13, working in the slot of the standard l above the brace-arm 4 and serving to prevent the guide-foot attachment 7 from turning on the bolt 3. The slot 10 permits the foot 7 to be adjusted up and down to regulate the depth at which the shovel 2 shall travel in the ground, and the slidei bar 8 of the foot attachment travels in the furrow made by the shovel and serves to guide and steady the implement while at work.
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacriiicin g any of the advantages of this invention. j
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
In a guide attachment for plows and culti- Vators, the combination with the longitudinally-slotted standard, the shovel, and the heel-bolt projected rearwardly through. the slot of the standard, of a vertically-adjustable gnide-foot attachment arranged at the rear side of the standard and comprising a single casting having a straight rearwardlydisposed slide-bar and a curved securing- IOO plate disposed at an angle to the loar and projeeted upwardly from the front end thereof, said securing-plate having a longitudinallydisposed slot receiving the heel-bolt, and upper and lower rest-lugs at its ends to rest flat against the rear side of the standard, the upper of said lugs having a short guide-stud working in the slot of the standard, and a clamping-nut engaging the heel-holt at the rear side of said securing-arm, substantially 1o as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed iny signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HEDLEY VHITE.
