J. A. H UMBAOH.
SASH PASTE-NEE.
No. 571,465. Patented Nov. 17, 1896.
WITNESSES INVENTOR ATTOBNEVJ.
UNITED STATES PATENT UEEICE,
JOHN A. H. UMBAOII, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 571,465, dated November 17, 1896. Application filed July 1,1896. Serial No 597,667. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, J OHN A. 1-1. UMBACH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Savannah, in the county of Ohatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vindow-Sash Locks and Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which'similar letters of reference indi-' cate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to supports and locks for window-sashes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation, and which is designed to support and look a window-sash in any desired position.
The invention is fully disclosed in the followingspecification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure l is a sectional side view of a part of a window-frame, a part of a window-sash mounted therein, and showing my improved sash lock and support connected therewith; and Fig. 2, a transverse section of a part of the frame and the sash and showing a part of the sash lock and support in plan.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at A a portion of a window-frame, and at B a portion of the sash, and in the practice of my invention I secure to the frame A vertical side strips 0, between which is placed a vertical metal strip D, which is provided centrally of its outer surface with a countersunk vertical groove E, and I also form in the bottom portion 19 of the sash a chamber F, having an inwardly-directed extension f, provided with avertical passage f which opens through the top of the bottom portion 12 of the sash.
The chamber F is provided with side plates G, between which is mounted a roller H, hav- 1mg gear-teeth formed at each end thereof, which are adapted to operate in connection with corresponding gear-teeth it, formed on the sides of the vertical strip D at each side of the vertical countersunk groove E, and the roller II is provided centrally with a flange 77. which is adapted to move in said groove. Pivotally supported above the roller H is a pawl K, having gear-teeth on its lower side which are adapted to engage with the gearteeth on one end of the roller H, and said pawl is provided with an arm is, which projects into the extension f of the chamber F, and the end thereof is pivotally connected with a vertical rod L, by which the pawl K is operated.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
IVhenever it is desired to raise the sash, it is only necessary to pull upwardly on the rod L, thus raising the pawl K, when the sash may be raised to any desired point, where it will be held, when the rod L is released, by the pawl K, which engages with the roller II.
In raising and lowering the window-sash the gear-teeth at the ends of the roller H engage with those on the metal strip D, and the flange or rim h at the center of said roller serves to center the sash and keep it in any desired position and to prevent the cramping or twisting thereof.
It will be apparent that whenever the pawl K is engaged with the roller H the sash will be securely locked in position and cannot be.
either raised or lowered, and it will thus be seen that I provide an effective device and one which is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the re sult for which it is intended, and which will not easily get out of order or need repair.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In the herein-described window-sash lock and support, the combination with the frame of a window and sash slidably mounted therein, of a vertical metal strip connected therewith, and having a central longitudinal groove, at each side of which are formed gearteeth, of a roller H having gear-teeth formed at each end thereof, adapted to operate in connection with the teeth formed on said vertical strip, said roller having an annular flange adapted to engage said groove, and a pawl K pivotally supported adjacent to said roller, and having gear teeth on its lower side, adapted to engage the gear-teeth on the roller said pawl being" provided with an arm and enee 0f the subscribing Witnesses, this 25th a vertical rod L, pivotally connected with day of June 1896. said arm and by means of which said pawl is operated, substantially as shown and de- JOHN A. 1-1. UMBACH. scribed. \Vitnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as A. N. OKEEFEE, my invention I have signed my name, in pi'es- P. R. SPRINGER.
