VILLIAM J. PERDUE, OF FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS.
TICKET-BooK covER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. `5'? 1,390, dated November 1'?, 1896.
Application filed August 4, 189 6.
Serial No. 601,626. (No model.)
bastian and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and Improved Ticket-Book Cover, of which the following is a specication.
'This invention relates generally to railroadtickets, and more particularly to a straightedge or cutter adapted for use in detaching the passengers portion of the ticket from the conductors stub.
The object of my invention is to provide a flexible cover capable of being attached to any book or pad of tickets now in use and provided with a straight-edge by means of which the tickets can be quickly and easily detached.
Another object is to provide a straight-edge which will be exceedingly strong and durable and will cut the ticket with a smooth even finish.
A still further object is to provide an adjustable cover carrying the straight-edge whereby said straight-edge can be quickly and easily adjusted Without forming a bundlesome fold or surplusage of cover, as is now the case with the ticket-book covers in common use.
With these various objects in view my invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a ticket book or pad, of an adjustable flexible cover connected therewith and carrying a straight-edge or cutter at its free end.
My invention consists also in providing aV iication, Figure l is a view showing my invention in use. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal section of a ticket book or pad provided with my improvement. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the fiexible cover carrying the straight-edge or cutter. Fig. 4 is a det-ail view ot' the straight-edge or cutter.
In carrying out my invention I employ a book or pad A of tickets which may be of any desired construction, said book or pad having a back or bottoni B, of pasteboard or other suitable stiff material. In connectionA with this book or pad of tickets I employa iieXible cover C, having a straight-edge or :ruler D at one end, a sleeve E being arranged at the opposite end, said sleeve being adapted to slide upon the back or bottom of the book or pad, whereby the cover can be moved up or down, as desired, to bring the straight-edge or cutter opposite any desired point where it is intended to sever the tickets.
By having the cover slidably connected to f the bottom or back by means of the sleeve of said cover a straight-edge can be adj usted by simply moving the said sleeve with the left hand, the right hand being free for the purpose of tearing off the ticket.
By having the cover adjustably and slidably connected to the book or pad a surplusage of material of the cover is taken up and is therefore. not in the way of the conductor;
and, furthermore, the cover constructed in this manner can be attached to any of the books or pads now in use and will last for an indefinite period, the cover of course being constructed of some strong flexible material.
The straight-edge is preferably formed of thin sheet metal and is connected to the inner face of the cover by adhesives or any other means, and the outer edge of this straightedge or cover is flanged or bent downward, as shown at D', whereby a neater cut of the ticket is attained.
The operation of my invention having been fully described, its advantages are apparent to every one skilled in the art to which it pertains and familiar with railroa(3l-conductors with the back or bottom of said book or pad, and having a straight-edge or cutter at its free end, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with the ticket book or pad, of the flexible cover slidably connected to the back orbottom of the book or pad, and having a metallic straight-edge or cutter at its free end, said straight-edge or cutter having its outer edge flanged or turned down- Ward, substantially as shown and described. 4. The combination With the ticket book or pad, of the cover having a sleeve at one end adapted to slide over the back or bottom of the ticket book or pad, and having a metallic lto a ticket book or pad, said cover having a sleeve at one end, and a metallic straight-edge zo or cover at the opposite end all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
VILLIAM J. PERDUE.
