UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALVAH B. JAOOBUS, OF UDALL, KANSAS.
TRIMMING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,805, dated November 3, 1896. Application filed. September 9, I895. Serial No. 561,988. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVAH B. J ACOBUS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Udall, in the county of Cowley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to attachments for sewing-machines, and its object is to provide a device for the use of dressmakers, tailors, and others for clipping the seams of dresses and other articles to prevent raveling.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sewing-machine attachment constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the punch.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates a rectangular plate which is designed to take the place of the plate in a sewin g-machine which is above the shuttle. This plate is formed or provided with an extension 2,havin g an aperture 3 foraset-screw,bywhich it is held in place.
Secured to plate 1 is a bracket 4, provided at its upper end with a lever 5, having a slot 6 at one end, in which is an apertured block 7 designed to be connected with the needlebar of a sewing-machine. At the opposite end there is a link 8,with which is connected a lever 9,also pivoted to the bracket. At its front end this lever 9 is provided withatriangular punch 10, which passes through an aperture in a guide-plate 12 and is adapted to Work in a correspondingly-shaped aperture in a cutting-plate 13, secured to plate 1. This punch and cutting-plate should be made of highlytempered steel, while the other parts can be made of any metal found desirable.
The numeral 14 designates a horizontal arm secured to bracket 4 and formed at its free end with an offset 15, which also serves as a guide for the punch.
The operation is as follows: The needle is removed from the needle-bar, and the plate in the cloth-plate of the machine above the shuttle is also removed. The plate 1 is then substituted for said plate and secured to the clothplate by means of a set-screw. The nut or block 7 is then connected with the screw of the needle-bar, and the goods to be clipped are inserted between the guide-plate and cutter-plate. The machine is now set in motion, when the punch will be rapidly reciprocated by means of the levers and connections,
and at the same time the goods will be fed forward by the sewing-machine feed. This movement of the punch will cause a series of triangular cuts or gores to be made in the seams, so that there will be no liability of raveling.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is' In a sewing-machine attachment, the combination with the plate having an extension formed with a screw-hole, the cutting-plate secured to said plate and formed with a triangular aperture, the guide-plate located above the cutting-plate and formed with a registering aperture, the bracket, and the arm secured thereto formed at the outer end with a beveled offset, of the punch, the link connected therewith, the lever pivotally connected with said link, and the link and lever adapted to be connected with the needle-bar of a sewing-machine, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALVAH B. J ACOBUS.
