CUFF OR BORDER FOR UNDERGARMENTS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 570,694, dated November 3, 1896.

Be it known that we, JOHN A. BENNETT and WILLIAM B. CLARK, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Oohoes, in the county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to garments, and particularly to a knitted cuff for shirts and drawers.

Heretofore, on very thick goods, the singlethickness cufi, if made of such weight as to correspond with the thickness andweiglit of the article, has not presented such aneat appearance as is desired in the trade, and, fur-,

thermore, is not so formed as to stand the strain of the forcing through of the hands or feet without getting out of shape. Furthermore, if made so that the wales correspond in size with the wales of the goods, thereby presenting a neat appearance, the thickness is not sufiicient to afiord the proper warmth to those portions of the body covered by the cuff.

The object of the present invention is to provide a double cuff, formed with a royal widening or tuck .stitch at the upper end, where it is joined to the garment, this upper portion being of greater width than the lower portion, thus allowinga greater circumference of seam than can be had by using a cufi that is of equal width at each end, and as a result the main portion of the cuff will adjust itself to the wrist or ankle without danger of fitting tight or binding at the seam, and also allowing the hand or foot to go through readily.

The invention consists, therefore, in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 represents a plan View of the cuff before it is applied to the garment. Fig. 1 represents the blank shown in Fig. 1 after the same has been doubled on the line a a. Fig. 2 represents a garment provided with the improved cuff.

Fig. 3 represents the fabric when used as the lower portion or border of a shirt, and Fig. 4: is a view showing the two kinds of stitches employed.

In the drawings, A represents the body of the garment, and B the part which forms the cuff or border. This part B is knit in the shape shown in Fig. 1, that is, widened at both ends, by being provided with a portion 0 adjacent to each end, which is knit with a tuck-stitch T, (shown in detail in Fig. 4,) the main body of the fabric being herein shown at R as knit-ribbed in the usual Way. To form the cuff, the fabric B is folded upon itself along the central line a Ct. It is then folded along the longitudinal line b b and the edges joined together. The top edge D of the folded fabric is then sewed to the sleeve of the shirt or leg of the drawers in the usual way, thus forming the bell-shaped. double cuff with a widened tuck-stitchportion at the upper end.

In Fig. 3 there is shown a similarfabric B, only formed very much wider and not so long, for use in forming the border or lower part of a shirt.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and what it is desired to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A garment provided with a cuff or border formed of double thickness, and having a bell-shaped upperportion adjacent the point where it is secured to the garment, said upper portion being formed with a widening or tuck stitch; substantially as described.

2. A knitted cuff comprising the fabric B formed adjacent either end with a tuck-stitch portion, said fabric being adapted to be folded end to end and longitudinally to form the double bell-shaped tube or cuff; substantially as described.
