(No Model.) I
O. OONGELTON.
CUFF LINK. No. 570,457. Patented Nov. 3, 1896.

UNITED STATES OSBORN OONGELTON,
CUFF-LINK.
PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,457, dated November 3, 1896.
Application filed February 18,1896. Serial No. 579,777. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSBORN OONGEL'ION, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ouff-Links, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in cuff-links; and the object of my invention is to produce a very simple and practical device which has two button portions connected by a flexible separable joint, which enables the two parts of the link to be easily placed in position in the buttonholes of a cuff and united, which is arranged to hold the parts so that they will not become accidentally detached, but which permits the ready separation of the parts when the link is to be removed from the cuif.
To these ends my invention consists of certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one part of the link. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the opposite part of the link to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional elevation showing the application of the link to a cuif. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the shank of one of the buttons, showing the manner in which the head is held in the ball of the opposite button; and Fig. 5 is a view of a slightlymodified form of the fastening-joint of the device.
The device comprises two buttons 10, which may be made in any suitableway and in any desired design, and these buttons have rigid shanks 11, one of which terminates in a hollow ball 12, having a transverse slot 13 on its inner side, and the other of which terminates in a flattened head 14, which is preferably circular and which when turned in one direction is adapted to enter the slot 13 of the ball 12, but which when given a quarter-turn cairnot be removed. The slot 13 is large enough to permit the head 14 to readily enter it when the head is placed in one position, but if the head is turned quarten-way around after being first entered in the slot it is retained in the ball 12.
in position for use, while the other button is placed at right angles to its ordinary position, so that the head 14 can enter the slot 13, after which the button is turned sufficiently to bring it to normal position, and this brings the head 14 across the slot 13, as shown in Fig. 3. The ordinary tension of the cuff and the friction on the shanks 11 are sufficient to keep the parts in position after they are once adjusted.
If desired, the connecting parts of the two shanks 11 may be made as in Fig. 5, which form I prefer. As here shown, the slot 13 is parallel with the greatest width of the shank 11, while the head 14 is at right angles to the width of the shank. The parts are connected as already described, but the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 5 gives a little more play to the joint.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved cuff-link, comprising oppositely-arranged buttons having rigid shanks, the shank of one terminating in a hollow slotted ball and the shank of the other terminating in a head adapted to enter the slot but of a width greater than the width of the slot, substantially as described.
2. An improved cuif-link,comprising a button having a rigid shank and a hollow slotted ball thereon, the slot being parallel with the greatest width of the shank, and a second button having a rigid shank with a head thereon arranged at right angles to the greatest width of the shank, the said head being adapted to enter the slot of the hollow ball, substantially as described.
OSBORN OONGELTON.
