CORSET.
No. 570,398.` Patented Oct. 27, 1896.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
FRANKLIN K. I-IICKOK, OF NEV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 570,398, dated October 27, 1896. Application filed June 19, 1896. Serial No. 596,103. (No model.)
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN K. I-lIcKoK, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Corsets 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, and which said drawings constitute part of this specilication, and represent, iii- Figure l, a side view of one-halt` of a corset embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a section on the line a b of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a section on the line c d of Fig. l; Fig. 4, a plan view of the central portion of the hip-section and two side strips.
This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, and particularly to that class in which the lower portion of the hip-section is shorter than the main body of the corset, and which are commonly called cutaway corsets. ln the more general construction of corsets of this class the lower edge of the hip-section is rounded, the points merging into the front and back sections of the corset; but difficulty is experienced in cutting the fabric to give the desired shape to the corset.
The object of this invention is to produce a corset of the cutaway type having the hipsection constructed so that it may be readily cut from fabric and provide a neat and comfortable corset which will retain its shape over the hip; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
A represents the front section, and B the back section, of a corset, which may be of any approved construction, and which do not re quire description. Between these sections A and B is the hip-section, which consists of a central portion C, shorter than the sections A B and curved at its lower end, to which is attached an elastic portion D, the two portions C D being united by a reinforce which overlaps the adjacent edges of the two parts. The side edges of these combined parts are connected with the front and back sections A B by strips F G, which form pockets for the side steels I-l. By thus cutting the central portion C independent of the side strips I am enabled to obtain the desired shape for the hip-section, which can thus be cut without difficulty and without waste of material, and in single-thickness corsets the fabric may be out so that the direction of weave of the cloth will be such as to avoid improper stretching. The reinforce strengthens the corset where the greatest strain comes and protects the upper edge of the elastic section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described corset comprising a front and back section and a hip-section composed of a central portion shorter than the front and back sections, and curved at its lower end, an elastic section secured to the lower edge of said central section and con nected thereto by a reinforce overlapping said two sections, said combined hip-section connected to the front and rear sections by double stay-strips, substantially as described..
In testimony whereof I have signed this specication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
