WVILLIAM O. BULL, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO TVILLIAM A. MAOAN AND ROBERT V. LYSLE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
METAL BAND FOR SECTIONAL JACKETS 0R STEAM-PIPE COVERINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 570,276, dated October 27, 1896. Application filed February 14,1896. Serial No. 579,227. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM O. BULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Bands for Sectional Jackets or Steam-Pipe Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to a metal band for application to sectional jackets and steampipe coverings, arranged so as to be adapted to compensate for expansion as well as to permit of take-up in the case of contraction of such coverings, and also to prevent of disengagement and turning in connection with such coverings.
The principal objects of my invention are, first, to provide a simple, durable, and effective metal band for sectional and steam-pipe coverings, and, second, to provide such a band with means to prevent turning, disengagement, or displacement of the same in connection with the covering.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a metal band for sectional jackets or steam-pipe coverings, constructed and arranged in'substantially the manner hereinafter described and claimed.
The nature and characteristic features of my invent-ion will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hoop, band, or clasp of my invention in an operative position. Fig. 2 is an interior elevational view of a portion of the hoop, band, or clasp with the two parts thereof united, and also showing the spur extended inwardly and adapted to engage with the surface of a cover or jacket for a steam-pipe to prevent the same from being dislodged or turning; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the band applied to a cover or jacket for a steam-pipe.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a hoop, band, or clasp of my invention, consisting of a fillet or strip of metal, one extremity a of which is provided with a depending inverted-V-shaped prong or spur c1, and with side wings I), h, c, and c. The wings I) and b form clamps for engaging and holding the opposite extremital portion a of the hoop or band A, which is adapted to be bent, as shown, and the clamps c and c are adapted to engage the top surface of the bent part a of the said band or hoop A to establish a substantial connection of one member of the band with the other and thereby to securely hold the two members together, yet at the same time adapted to afford a slight range of movement of one with respect to the other, due to the particular position of the clamps as securing means for the band in order to compensate for expansion of the covering B as well as to afford a means whereby contraction may be taken up by the loosening of the band in connection with the sectional jacket or steampipe covering B, for example, composed of magnesia or other suitable materials.
The contraction of the cover and slack of the band is compensated for by simply raising the clamps c and c and drawing upon the bent portion a of the hoop, band, or clasp A and restoring then the same to such a condition thereof as is illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The spur a, depending from the member a of the hoop or band A, is adapted to engage with the fibrous or other surface of the cover or jacket B, exposed to the same in operative position and to form a support substantially at the point of union of the two members of the band with the cover or jacket 13 to prevent thereat displacement of the same from the position which it is caused to assume in the first instance in its application to the cover or jacket B.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A band or hoop for a sectional jacket or steam-pipe covering, consisting of a single strip of metal, one end of which is bent down upon itself to form a double strip, the other end being provided with two series of side wings, one series being adapted to-be bent down between the doubled strips of the other end and to rest against the bend thereof, while the'other series of wings is adapted to be bent down to inclose both strips of the doubled end, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A band or hoop for a sectional jacket or rection opposite to that in which said wings are bent, substantially-as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\VM. 0. BULL.
