Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT W. O. TWEDDLE, OF PITTSBUBG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED COMPOSITION FOR LlN-lNG BARRELS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT W. O. TWED- DLE, of the city of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Glue and Cement for Oil and Turpentine or other Barrels or Oasks 5 and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in an improved composition for the lining or coating of barrels designed for holding petroleum.
It is well known that petroleum is of so penetrating a nature that it cannot be confined in casks, barrels, or other wooden vessels, no matter how tightly made and carefully jointed, Without considerable leakage. It is, therefore, necessary to line or coat the inside of the barrel or other vessel with some substance which will adhere to the Wood and be insoluble by the petroleum.
Common glue is found to be admirably suited for this purpose, with the exception that it is very quickly decomposed, so that a fresh supply has to be made very frequently, which is a great inconvenience in establishments which are constantly obliged to make use of it for the purpose specified.
In order to overcome this difficulty and prevent the tendency of glue and other cements of which glue forms a part to decompose, I add to the glue, when it is being melted for the purpose of coating oil-barrels, a small quantity of bichloride of mercury, (corrosive sublimate,) which has the desired effect and enables the glue to be kept for a long time without decomposing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The use of common glue or gelatine mixed with a small quantity'of bichloride of mercury as a coating for the interior of barrels for holding petroleum, turpentine, and other articles.
In testimony whereof I, the said HERBERT W. O. TW'EDDLE, have hereunto set my hand.
HERBERT W. O. TWEDDLE.
