Be it known that we, SAMUEL J. TURNER and CHARLES T. GLASSER, citizens of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pants-Leg Guards for Use in Riding Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.

Our, invention relates to pants-leg guards in the form of an open ring for holding the loose portion of the pants-leg at the ankle tightly about the leg, so as to prevent such loose portion from catching on or interfering with a bicycle, or from rubbing against the same while a man is riding thereon; and the objects of our invention are to produce a holder that will clamp and hold the pants-leg about the ankle in such way as to hold it neatly and firmly, and at the same time avoid wrinkling of the pants-leg, and so that where there is a central front crease in the pants-leg such crease will be preserved, notwithstanding such folding of the pants-leg. WVe attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the right foot and a portion of the leg of a person with our device adjusted upon the pants-leg. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of our pants-leg guard. Fig. 3 is a top edge view of the pants-leg guard, showing in section the fold of the pants in position held by the clamp of the guard before the guard is clamped around the leg of the rider. Fig. 4 is a top edge view of the guard and a section of the pants, the same as Fig. 3, but with the guard brought around the leg and clamped so as to be in position for use, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail showing the cap for the end of the inner jaw.

The pants-leg guard is formed of a single spring-wire 1 bent or folded upon itself, so as to form a clamp 2 near one of the ends, as shown in Fig. 2. In this clamp the outer wires 3 4 of the fold and the transverse portion 5 of the wire form the outer jaw of the clamp, while the interior folds 6 7 and the main wire 1 form the inner jaw of the clamp. WVe prefer to make the inner jaw of the clamp 2 the from catching in the pants-leg in putting the guard upon the pants.

In order to place the guard upon the pants 11, one hand will grasp the pants in front at the end of the pants-leg, while the outer jaw of the holder may be grasped between the thumb and forefingers of the other hand. In this way the guard is readily slipped upon the pants-leg, so that it assumes the position shown in Fig. 3. The free portion of the guard is then drawn around the leg and tightly clamps the fold of the pants about the ankle, as shown in Figs. 1 and at. If the pants are creased in front, that crease will be represented by line 12, Fig. 1, and it will readily be seen that the crease will be preserved notwithstanding the folding of the pants. In the common open ring-guard in general use there is nothing to preserve and hold this crease in place, and the pants are otherwise wrinkled and become dis-adjusted in riding the wheel. By the use of our device this difficulty is obviated. Besides the same is inexpensive in construction and convenient for use.

What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A pants-leg guard composed of wire so bent upon itself as to form, near one end of the guard, spring-jaws which are adapted to grasp and hold the fold of the pants, while the whole is adapted to encircle the leg and tightly clasp the pants about the leg, substantially as shown and described.

2. A pants-leg guard composed of springwire in the form of an open ring, provided with outer and inner jaws formed by folding the wire upon itself, so that the forward end of the outer jaw extends transversely across the wires of the inner shown and described.

3. In a pants-leg guard, the combination of a spring-clasp in the form of an open ring, a
