PAPER-HANGING MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,835, dated October 20, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANTON MARKMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Hanging Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in paper hanging machines, and aims to provide a hand-operated mechanism which will facilitate the Work of the upholsterer and obviatethe use of the old appliances and methods, thereby simplifying and reducing the cost and labor of hanging paper.

The device embodies a support for the pathe paste is supported on a frame 2 and closed at its upper end by a cover 3. A longitudinal slit or opening is provided in the lower side of the case for the passage of a strip of paper in the operation of the device. The location of the case 0 is immaterial, but for convenience and to balance the structure it is located at the rear end of the reservoir A. The cutting appliance for removing the margin and reducing the paper to the required Width is composed of two coacting rotary cutters F, which are carried by brackets 4, adj ustably secured on parallel bars 5, supported at their ends by arms 6, which are attached to the ends of the reservoir A. For convenience the cutting appliance is located beneath the reservoir byadjusting brackets 4 on the bars 5. The cutters can be moved to the required position to reduce the strip of paper to the required width.

The arm 2, which supports the several parts or structure, is composed of side bars N and a cross-bar 7, the latter having atang or shank 8 at a point intermediate of its ends to which a pole or handle 9 is attached, by means of which the structure is conveniently elevated to the required level. The side bars N are deflected midway of their ends. and a pressure-roller 0 is journaled between their free ends, which ends project sufficiently far in advance of the paste-reservoir to enable the free operation of the pressure roller without interference of any of the other parts of the device. The cutter for severing the strip of paper in the required lengths is carried by pivoted arms 10, which are supported on the side bars N. A stop 11 limits the upward movement of the arms 10 and holds the cutter 12 in position for immediate use when it is desired to cutthe required length of paper. This cutter 12 is a knife-blade of ordinary construction attached at its ends to the up per free ends of the arms 10. A cord 13, at tached at its upper end to the lower end of the arms 10 and passing through guide-eyes 14, extends within convenient reach of the lower end of the pole or handle 9 to be easily operated when it is required and actuate the arms 10 to bring the cutter 12 in operative This cord 13 near its upper end is composed of two branches, which pass through a guide-.

eye 15 and extend in opposite direction to the ends of the cross-bar 7, thence through the guide-eyes 14 to the ends of the arms 10.

The operation of theinvention is as follows: The paper in the roll is mounted on a rod d and placed within the case 0 and the end is drawn through the slit or opening in the said case and passes over a suitable guide-roller E, between the cutters F, the parallel bars 5, over the resistance-roller G,beneath the brush H, and over the pressure-roller O. In its passage between the resistance-roller G and the brush H the strip of paper is pasted on the reverse side and is in condition to be applied to the wall. By grasping the pole or handle 9 and operating the device so as to bring the pressure-roller O with the end of the paper thereon against the wall and moving the device upward on the wall the paper will be drawn from the roll and attached to the wall, in the manner readily understood. The adhesion of the paper to the wall in the manipulation of the structure causes the paper to be drawn from the roll, as is obvious. W'hen the device has reached to within a short distance of the wall,the cord 13 is pulled and the cutter 12 brought in operative relation in connection with the pressure-roller O to sever the strip.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- The herein-described paper-hanging machine, composed of the following instrumentalities: a paste-reservoir provided with a regulating-slide, a paste-distributing device adjustably connected with the reservoir, a resistance-roller operated in conj unction with the paste-distributing device, a cutting mechanism to remove the margin and reduce the strip of paper to the required width, a support for the roll of paper, a pressure-roller, pivoted arms adapted to be operated from the floor, and having a limited movement, and a cutter attached to and carried by the said pivoted arms, substantially as described for the purpose set forth.
