UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
IVILLIAM'S. BATES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,600, dated October 20, 1896.
Application filed February 29, 1896. Serial No. 581,258. (No model.)
To (all whmn it rncty concern-s Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. BATES, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles, whereof the following is a specification.
My invention relates to puzzles tobe made of flat material, such as celluloid, paper, 850-.
It consists in a fiat spiral with aelosed outer end or coil, a loop through which the spiral is threaded, and adisk or its equivalent to prevent the loop being taken oif the inner end of the spiral. The spiral should be sufficiently flexible to permit its outer coil being bent or doubled over on itself, so as to pass through the loop, and its outer diameter should be greater than the length of the slot in the loop.
I is the fiat spiral, having its outer end closed by connecting the end of the outer coil to the next coil.
2 is the loop, strung upon one of the coils of the spiral.
3 is the disk, secured to the inner end of the spiral by a rivet 4: or otherwise.
To solve the puzzle, the loop is pushed through the spiral to the position shown in Fig. 3. The edges 5 6 of the spiral are then 3 5 brought together between the finger and thumb by bending the outer coil of the spiral and slipped through the loop.
I clairn The herein-described puzzle composed of a flat spiral With a closed outer end, a disk secured to the inner end of the spiral, and a loop strung upon one of the coils of the spiral, substantially as set forth.
