CARL OSCAR NELSON, OF EAST PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.,
" ncorr-scarin,-`
Leashes..
To all 'whom t may concern.' A
Be it known that l, CARL OSCAR NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State vof Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hook- Scales, of which the following is a speci- This invention relates to the general class of scales and `particularly to the particular class of hook scales. i
-One of the objects of the invention is to provide a hook scale which will be inexpensive to manufacture, easy to operate and which may be used `as a calipers if desired.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will appeary hereinafter, it being understood that changes in form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
In the drawings Figure l is a perspective view of the invention, showing the parts distended in the manner that the device will be used 'as a calipers.
Fig. 2 is sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. l, and,
Fig. 3 is asectional view on the line 3-8 of Fig. l.
The device is illustrated as consisting of two parts l, and 2, substantially of the same construction and each of which is provided with an elongated slot. The slot in the part l is designated by the numeral 3 and the slot in the part 2 is designated by the numeral 4f.
At the one end of each part is a right angularly extending finger or projection, these-,being designated by the reference numerals 5 and 6 respectively. The nger 6 on the part 2 extends across one side of the part one and around the other as shown at 7 to form a loop 8 through the half of which the bar of the part 1 slides. There is an cifset 9 which carries a headed pin l0, projecting through the slot 4L to prevent lateral movement of the bar of the part l within the loop 8. lThe end 11 of the part l is provided `with a pin 12 which also projects through Specification oi Letters Patent.

fit within the loop 8. The edges of one or both of the parts l and 2 may be calibrated in the usual manner to have the usual divisions thereon as indicated at 13 and 14:.
When the device is to be used as a hook scale the parts l and 2 will ordinarily be n brought together and the fingers 5 and 6, or
one of them may be hooked under a part to be measured and by observing the calibrations the dimension of the measured part may be determined.
W'hen it is desired to use the device as a calipers, the parts will be distended and the length of the division or space between the fingers 5 and 6 will indicate the dimension sought for example the diameter of a rod, shaft or the like.
The device may be constructed of any suitable material, but I prefer to make it of sheet steel or some similar material.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the device herein described can be constructed in an inexpensive manner and that it is well adapted to perform the functions for which it was designed.
What I claimand desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
l. A hook scale comprising two parts each of which is provided with a right angularly extending iinger, the finger of one of the parts being bent back upon itself to form a loop for the reception of the other finger, one 0f said parts carrying graduations.
2. A hook scale comprising two parts, each of which is provided with elongated slots, guide pins on one of said parts and projecting through the said slots, and right angularly extendingiingers at adjacent ends of said parts, one of said fingers being in the form of a loop for the reception of the other finger.
8. A hook scale of the class described comprising two bars each of which is provided with an elongated slot and with a right In testimony whereofl I aiix my signature angular extending finger, the nger of one in presence of two Witnesses.
of the bars being bent back upon itself to e i form a loop for therecepton of the other CARL NELSON' 5 ngervand pins mounted in the slots' and asv Witnesses: v
rsociated With the bars, one of the pins being EDW. BLOTZER,
supported at the loop. 'y P. MCGLASHAN.
