SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,568, dated October 13, 1896.
Original application filed December 6, 1894, Serial No, 531,006. Divided and this application filed 311118 5, 1896. Serial No. 594,860. (No model.) 1'0 tall whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, OTTO SCHU BERT and MAX SCHUBERT, subjects of the King of Prussia, Emperor of Germany, residing at Oharlottenburg, near Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Strips for the Corners of Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is embodied in the following patents: in Great Britain, No. 8,485, dated April 16, 1891; in Belgium, No.112,631, dated November 8, 1894:; in Sweden, N0. 6,38%, dated November 9, 1894; in Switzerland, No. 9,36 1, dated Novc1nber12, 1894:; in Denmark,
No. 257, dated November 13, 1894, and in Italy, No. 37,633/474, dated November 17,
189%, and in an application in Russia, No.
20,8ai9, dated November 8, 189%, on which a patent has not yet been granted.
Our present application is a division of our allowed application, serially numbered 531,006, filed December 6, 1894, which covers a machine for applying serrated metal strips 2 5 to the corners of cardboard and other boxes.
Our present invention covers the improved form of metal strip which has its edges formed with dovetailed recesses and bentover dovetailed serrations having inbent 3o prongs.
In order that our invention may be fully understood, we will first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, and afterward point out the novelty 3 5 with more particularity in the annexed claim.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a view of our improved corner-binding strip. Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrating the position of one edge of the strip before it enters the side of the box. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the edge of the strip embodied in g the box; Fig. 4 is a detail cross-sectional view showing the position of the strip on the corner of the box.-
The metal strip A is formed with dovetailed serrations a, which are adapted to be arched or bent over into the form shown in Fig. 2, with the prongs of the serrations projecting inwardly.
The pieces of paper board or wood forming the box are placed together, as shown in Fig. 4, and the strip is bent along a central longitudinalline, with the prongs of the arched serrations projecting toward the parts of the box. The prongs are then forced intothe parts of the box into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4:. This effects a fastening which can only be loosened by a forcible destruction of the connected parts of the box.
The machine for applying the corner-pieces to boxes is fully described and claimed in our application above referred to. Such cornerpicces, applied in the above-described manner, possess the advantage that the serrations are not subjected to bending, the operation of fastening being effected by one pressure, and at the same time they are a perfect substitute for fasteners applied in the interior of boxes which can easily be bent up and are frequentlya disturbing element in the same.
hat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A metal strip for a metal-corner-binding machine having its edges formed with dovetail recesses and with bentover dovetail serrations having inbent prongs; substantially as described.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
OTTO SOHUBERT. MAX SOHUBERT.
