G. P. DARNELL.
FENCE.
Patented Oct. 13, 1896.
av /WW! W/T/VESSES:
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN F. DARNELL, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
FENCE.
. SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 569,276, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed January 13, 1896. Serial No. 575,282. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN F. DARNELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wire fences; and it 0011- sists in a peculiar arrangement of the longitudinally-extending wires, hereinafter more fully set forth.
The object of my invention is to arrange the longitudinally-extending wires to cross in parallel rows to form a reticulated inclosure or fence, and to so arrange and connect and support each of the wires to independently expand or contract and maintain a uniform tension throughout their entire length; also, to arrange a series of intermediate pickets between each of the points of the crossing of the wires or between each of the alternate vertical rows or interstices or meshes to secure the parallelism of the wires and the symmetry of the meshes or interstices. I attain these objects by means of the wire fence illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar numbers of reference designate like parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the fence, showing the arrangement of the wires and the pickets thereof. Fig. 2 is detail broken enlarged views of a picket or post, showing the manner of stringing the wires therethrough; and Fig. 3 is detail views of a similar picket or post, showing the button-wire supportingcatch.
I first construct the outer or end post 1 preferably of iron pipe and firmly secure the same vertically in the ground in any suitable manner. This post I provide with a. series of clamping-clips 2, which I arrange at equal vertical distances apart along said post, and to which latter the clips are clamped and secured by their clamping-bolts 3. I next construct the intermediate or supportingposts 4 which are also firmly secured vertically in the ground, and in which are drilled a number of holes arranged in vertical rows and in pairs, (see Fig. 2,) and through which the longitudinally-extending wires are passed and loosely fit.
The pickets 5 are arranged between the end post and the intermediate posts 4: and are drilled similarly to the latter post to receive the fence-wires at their spread portions or interstices.
The top and bottom wires 6 and 7 of the fence extend longitudinally and horizontally through the top and bottom holes of the intermediate pickets and supporting-posts 4, and are firmly secured at their ends to the clip-securing bolts 3, by which they are held taut.
The intermediate wires 8 extend longitudinally in parallel series of five, more or less, according to the depth or height of the fence, and are each crossed intermediate between the posts or pickets 5, through which they pass, and held apart at their separated portions or interstices.
I do not confine myself particularly to this form of perforated picket or post for the purpose hereinbefore described, and illustrated in Fig. 2, as a button 9, (illustrated in Fig. 3,) may also be employed to accomplish the same purpose, namely, to permit the free longitudinal expansion of each of the wires independently of each other without distorting or causing the posts to be forced out of alinement or their vertical positions.
Having thus fully described this my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to cover by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is-
In a fence, the combination, with the posts 5, of the buttons 9, extending outward from said posts the width of two wires, and wires 8, each extending in a Zigzag direction and supported alternately on the upper side of a button on one post and then on the lower side of a lower button on the next post, and so on, each button having a wire resting against its upper and against its lower sides, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CALVIN F. DARNELL.
