Beit known that we, FRANCIS XAVIER WAL- DRON, a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, and JOHN PAQUET, aresident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Umbrellas, Canes, &c., of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to supports for umbrellas, canes, hats, &c., and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class with an alarm attachment, said device being adapted for use in hallways or other and similar places; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side View of our improvement, part thereof being shown in full lines; and Fig. 2, a front elevation.

In the practice of our invention we provide asupport for hats, umbrellas, canes, and other articles, which comprises a vertical back or or board A, which is adapted to be supported adjacent to a wall B and at the bottom of which is a receptacle D, provided with a cover d, which is adapted to open outwardly, and said back or boardAis provided, adjacent to said cover d, with a transverse aperture E, in which is secured a plate F, through which passes a spring-operated bolt G, on which is mounted a spring g, and said bolt is adapted to enter a notch or recess (1 in the edge of the cover cl, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

The spring g, encircling the bolt G, has a hearing at one end against the plate F, while its opposite end is connected with the bolt by being passed therethrough, or in any other suitable manner, the tendency of said spring being to hold the bolt retracted and free from engagement with the recess in the cover d.

In order to shoot the bolt into the recess (1 we have pivoted to the board A, and adjacent the outer end of the bolt, a bell-crank lever comprising arms k and 76, the latter arm bearing upon the adjacent end of the bolt, while arm A is perforated vertically to recei ve a vertical operating-rod A loosely. Stopblocks 5 and 6 are arranged upon the rod H above and below the arm 15 to successively engage the latter as the rod is reciprocated.

The rod 11, above referred to, extends from a point above the board A into a tubular casing K on a level with the base of our device and arranged in the rear thereof, said rod being provided upon its lower end with a head h, which prevents withdrawal of the rod through a centrally-arranged opening in the top of the casing K when under the influence of a helical spring 70, which latter is located within the casing K and forms a support for the rod-head.

About midway of the back of the board A is a vertical slot a, and secured in front thereof is a boX L, provided with a cover L which is hinged to the back A or to the upper side of the back of the boX L, and secured to the under side of said cover is an arm L which projects through a slot a, and the outer end thereof slotted and secured upon rod H by upper and lower projections L and L respectively, in order that the said arm L may be in permanent pivotal engagement with rod H, and the bottom of the box L is provided with apertures or openings L through which umbrellas or canes may be inserted, as shown at M and m, respectively, and the cover 61 of the box or receptacle D is provided with corresponding holes or openings m adapted to receive the ends of the umbrella-sticks and canes.

Pivotally connected with the upper end of the rod 11 is a lever O, which is fulcrumed at O and the inner end of which is provided with a depending spring-catch O which is adapted to engage with the end or side of a hat-support 0 which is provided with a cen tral circular opening and adapted to support a hat, as shown in dotted lines at O and connected with said rod H, below the lever O, is a cord P, which leads to and connects with an alarm-bell. The lever O is pivotally connected with the back or board A by means of a transverse rod R, as shown in Fig. 2, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In order to place a hat, umbrella, or cane in position, it is necessary to detach the spring-catch O in the hat-support O and to raise the inner end of the lever O, and in this operation the rod H is depressed, and this rings the bell with which the cord P is connected, and in this operation the cover L of the box L is raised by the arm L which is depressed by the downward pressure of the upper lug on the rod H, and an umbrella or cane, or both, may be placed therein, as will be readily understood. It will also be seen that the handle of the umbrella and that of the cane do not project above the top of the box L, and the operation of the cover thereof is not interfered with thereby, and

after these articles have been placed in position the lever O is again depressed and connected with the hat-support.

Vhen it is desired to remove the hat and other-articles, or either of them, the process above described is repeated and the alarmbell is again rung.

The spring is in the tubular casing K serves simply as a support for the rod H and assists in returning it to its normal position after it has been depressed.

The box or receptacle D is intended to receive various articles,and in order to raise the cover thereof the rod H must be depressed, as hereinbefore described, and this movement releases the outer end of the spring-operated bolt G, after which the cover cl of said box or receptacle may be raised, and when said cover is again closed and the rod depressed the bolt G will again engage said cover, as shown in Fig. 1.

It will thus be seen that we provide a support for hats, umbrellas, and similar articles having an alarm-bell connected therewith, which is rung whenever such articles are connected with or removed from the support, and it will also be seen that this device is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, and it is evident that'changes in and modifications of the construction herein described maybe made without departing from the spirit of our invention or sacrificing its advantages; and we reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In the herein-described support for hats, umbrellas &c. a backboard, a vertically-movable rod supported behind the same and having connection for attachment to an alarmbell, said rod being provided at its upper end with a pivoted lever which projects inwardly in front of said support and is provided with a spring-catch, a hat-support secured to said back portion, the outer end of which is adapted to be engaged by said spring-catch, backboard having formed therein about midway thereof a slot, a box or receptacle mounted on said back in front of said slot, provided with a hinged cover, an arm secured to the under side of said cover and adapted to project through a slot formed in the back of the board and to rest upon a support connected with said movable rod, said box being provided at its bottom with holes or openings, and a box or receptacle at the bottom of said board having a hinged cover provided with holes or openings corresponding to those in the other box, substantially as described.

2. In the herein-described support for hats, umbrellasdcc, abackboard, a vertically-movable rod supported behind the same and havin g connection for attachment to an alarmbell, said rod being provided at its outer end with a pivoted lever which projects inwardly in front of said support and is provided with a spring-catch, a hat-support secured to said back and adapted to be engaged by said spring-catch, said back having formed therein about midway thereof a slot, a box or receptacle mounted in front of said slot and provided with a hinged cover, an arm secured to the under side of said cover and adapted to project through a slot formed in said back and to rest upon its support connected with said movable rod, said box having formed in the bottom thereof, holes or openings, an additional box at the bottom of said back also provided with a hinged cover in which are formed openings corresponding with those in the bottom of the other box and means connected with said vertically-movable rod and with the cover of said box or receptacle at the bottom of said back for lockin g the covers therein in position, substantially as shown and described.
