ADJUSTABLE BINDER FOR INDEX-FIL'ES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,734, dated October 6, 1896.

Be it known that I, FRANCIS W. BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Binders for Index-Files, (for which I have obtained a patent in the Dominion of Canada, No. 66,723, bearing date August 9, 1894;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in adjustable temporary binders for index-nies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the same.

Reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved binder applied to a series of sheets forming one section of a complete file, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on line 00 x.

In said drawings, a represents the base; l?, staples attached to said base and adapted to hold a number of files. To use with this or similar devices it has been the custom to make holes in the ends 0f the sheets through which said staples are to be inserted, and between each series of leaves or sheets are blanks havin g index-letters attached to the edges thereof. This has been found objectionable, because the sheets, not having any binder at the end where they are attached to the staples, curl up and break out as the sheets are turned over. To obviate this objection is the purpose of the present invention. It consists of a plate of malleable metal d, covering the end of the index-blank c and the series of sheets c', and having holes e adapted to register with similar holes in the .blank and each sheet through which said staples pass, the free ends f of the metal being adapted to be bent around the edges and over the under side, firmly clamping sheets and blank together, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be evident from this construction that when a series of sheets, including the blank and binder, is removed from the staple the binder may be removed by unbending the turned ends, some of the sheets taken out or additional sheets inserted, the b inder again placed over the file, and the ends pressed down as before. Each series of sheets has a separate binder, only one being shown in Fig. 2.

It will be evident that the binder d would be equally adapted to be used on the side if it were desirable to open the file at the side instead of at the end.

The advantages are that there is no danger of the sheets breaking out, and at the same time the sheets may be removed or more sheets inserted when desired.

Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim- 1. In an adjustable temporary binder for indexed iles a base provided with standards mounted thereon, and a plate of malleable metal having holes therein adapted to register with holes in the sheets to be bound and to receive said standards the free ends of the plate extending beyond said holes and adapted to be bent around the sides of the sheets, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In an adjustable temporary binder for indexed iles a base provided with standards mounted thereon, an indexed card having holes therein, a series of sheets to be bound having holes therein and a plate of malleable metal having holes therein, the holes in the card-sheets and binder being adapted to register with each other and to receive said standards and the ends of said plate being adapted to be bent around the sides of said card and sheets, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
