Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SELF, DAVID J. BROUGHER, AND GEORGE H. HAMMER.
IMPROVED BROOM-HEAD.
` Specification forming part of Letters Paten-t No. 56,859, dated July 31, 11366.
To `all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. MIDDLE- TON, of Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom- Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, andY to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts Wherever they occur.
Y To enable others skilled inthe art to construct and use the invention, I will proceed to describe it.
Myinvention consists in a metallic frame of novel construction for holding the brush, and in securing the brush therein, in part, by means of cement.
Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section.
In the handling and preparing of brush for brooms more or less of the brush becomes broken or detached from the stalk, and as brooms are now constructed this is unavailable, and therefore useless. It is also found very difficult to retain the brush rmly in these metallic heads, more or less of it becoming loosened and falling out.
To remedy these two difculties is the object of my invention, which I do as follows: I first construct a metallic frame, B, which is an open or skeleton frame, havin g a socket at the upper end for the handle A, as shown in Fig. 1, said handle extending down, and being shaved off on its sides, as shown in Fig. 2. Into this frame B, I insert the brush from below, as shown, crowding the frame full. I then provide two metal strips, C, and placing them on the sides of the brush in the open space of the frame B, as shown in Fig. 1, I pass a bolt, a, through them, and also through the handle A, and secure it by a nut on the opposite side, as shown in Fig. 2. I then take any suitable cement, and, having heated it, pour or spread it upon the brush over the open space in the side of the frame. This cement penetrates among the brush, and when cooled unites and holds it all securely together, and preventing even detached straws or bers from falling out. The cement unites all the brush in a compact body, and the frame B holds it securelyr in place upon the handle. In this Way I am enabled to produce a very perfect article, and also to utilize all loose or detached brush.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim isl. rlhe skeleton-frame B, in combination with the clips O and handle A, when said parts are arranged as set forth.
2. In combination with the metallic frame, the application of cement, substantially as set forth, for the purpose of securing the brush in place.
