No. 568,580. Patented sept. 29, 1896.v

WILLIAM RICHARD, OF BLOOMVILLIE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DAVID ALLEN PARKS, OF SAME PLACE.
sHEIARs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,580, dated September 29, 1896.
Application tiled July 24, 1896.
T0 all whom, it 1v1/ay concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM RICHARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident: of Bloomville, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shears; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to shears, scissors, and other similar instruments and its obj ect is to provide an improved construction of the same, whereby the tension of the handles may be readily regulated and the cutting edges so held with respect to each other as to produce the best results; to provide an improved lubricating device by which frequent oilin g is rendered unnecessary and the lubricating material evenly distributed only at the points required; to provide improved means for connecting the handles together, and to otherwise improve the construction, whereby I secure important advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
The invention consists, essentially,in a pair of shears or other analogous instruments comprising two handles with jaws and cutting edges having a circular recess in the inner sides, a combined oil-cup and a washer lo cated therein, a yoke or compress for connecting the handles together, one side of which is seated in a groove in the outer side of one of the handles and the other side provided with a screw-threaded boss with which engages a regulating headless screw, the inner end ot' which Vbears against one of the handles, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
It also consists in forming one or both of the jaws with shoulders or projections at their outer edges, against which the inner edges of removable cutting-blades abut.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a side elevation of a pair of shears or scissors constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the two `handles disconnected, looking from the inner sides. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the yoke orcompress. Fig. 4 is a similar Serial No. 600,386. (No model.)
side and showing the inclined groove therein.
In the said drawings the reference-numerals l and 2 designate the handles of the shears, each provided with the usual finger-loops 3 and jaws 3, formed with cutting edges 4. Each of these handles is formed on the inner side with circular recesses 5, which register with each other when the handles are connected together, and Y in these recesses is seated a circular washer 6, having a central aperture 7 for containing lubricating material. This washer is preferably made of brass or copper and is formed with a peripheral groove tl.
The handle 2 on its outer side is formed with an inclined groove 9, in which is seated one of the sides of arectangular yoke or compress 10, which embraces the two handles, but which is suflciently large to permit of the necessary play in opening the handles to spread the cutting edges apart. On the opposite side the yoke is formed with a boss 12, having a screw-threaded aperture with which engages a headless screw 13, the inner end of which bears against the handle l.
In assembling the parts composing the shears the washer is inserted on one side of the recess 5 and a small quantity of oil placed in the central aperture of the washer. The other handle is then placed in or applied to the same and the recess therein engaged with the washer. The yoke is now slipped over the handles and one of its sides engaged with the inclined groove 9 and the screw 13 turned so as to compress the blades between the inner end and the side seated in the groove.
A pair of shears constructed as above will be found very advantageous and elicient in use. By turning the screw the tension of the handles can be regulated or adjusted, and as the screw is not headed it can be countersunk in the boss, preventing displacement, except by the use of a suitable screw-driver or other tool, and can also be used until entirely worn out, as its inward movement is not limited, as is the case with screws provided with heads. The blades are also self-sharpening.
The combined washer and oil-cup will uni- IOO formly lubricate the contacting parts at the points necessary, and will prevent the escape of the oil to the cutting edges or handles, which would be liable to soil the hands of the user and injure the material operated upon by the shears.
There are other advantages not necessary to enumerate here, but which will be readily appreciated by the users of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isi. As an improved article, a pair of shears or other analogous instrument, comprising the handles formed with registering circular recesses in their inner sides, the washer seated therein, the yoke embracing said handles and one of its sides engaging with a groove in the outer side of one of said handles and the regulating-serew passing through the opposite side of the yoke; substantially as described.
As an improved article a pair of shears or other similar instrument, comprising the blades having registering circular recesses in their inner sides, a combined washer and oileup seated in said recesses, having a central oil-aperture, the yoke embracing said handles and one of its sides engaging with a groove in one of the handles, and the screw passing through the opposite side of the yoke; substantially as described.
3. In a pair of shears or other analogous instrument, the combination of the handles having circular recesses in their inner sides, the washer having a central aperture seated in said recesses, and one of said handles having an inclined groove in its outer side, the rectangular yoke loosely embracing said handles with one of its sides engaging with said groove, the screw-threaded boss formed at the opposite side of said yoke, and the head- 4o less screw engaging therewith; substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
