CAN-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,485, dated September 29, 1896. Application filed February 24, 1893. Serial No. 463,540. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT S. LAMBERT and EDMUND HOFFMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Bridgeton, in the county of Cumberland, in the State of NewJersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Can-Covers, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to can-covers, and has for its object to provide a sheet-metal cover with a bail secured firmly thereto.
Our improved cover is especially, though not exclusively, adapted for use with cans and can-closures such as are described in the patent application of Albert S. Lambert, filed February 16, 1893, Serial No. 462,061., and is shown in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a can and cover, taken on the section-line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a plan of the can with cover in place; Fig. 3, an elevation of the can alone on section-line 1 1 aforesaid. Fig. 4 is a plan of the can alone. Figs. 5 and 6 are enlarged sections of the cover, taken on the lines 3 3 and 2 2, respectively, of Fig. 2; and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a portion of the bottom of the can-cover.
A is the can; B, its top, which, as described in the application mentioned, is formed with a depression I), an upwardly-extending bead b, an inwardly-extending rim b andadownwardly-extending edge 5 said edge and rim 5 having notches b cut in them at intervals and the edge I) being shaped to form inclined planes b and b extending, respectively, between the notches and below each of them.-
C is the can-cover, formed of two pieces of metal, one constituting the cover proper, having an annular plain flange c, a depressed bead c, and an upwardly-extending beadc surrounding its inner surface 0 The other cover is a disk of metal, preferably formed with slightly-depressed edges f, which fit neatly inside of the bead c and this plate is held in place by lugs E, formed by forcing over portions of the bead 0 upon the edge f of the plate F, which is readily done in a properly-formed die. The plate F is employed to secure a bail G to the cover, and this bail is of course secured to said plate, as by insertion in recesses f f, formed in its edge, before it is secured to the cover proper. At the same time lugs D are conveniently formed from the bead c, as shown in the drawings, a portion of said bead being forced out to form said lugs, which are placed so as to register with and enter the notches b and engage the wed ge-like edges b ,so that by turning the cover it is forced down upon the can, the flange c forming a tight joint with the bead b. When the cover is turned the other way, the lugs D ride up on the Wedges I)", thus aiding in lifting the cover from the can-top.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The can-cover C having an outer rim 0 an inner upwardly-extending bead 0 a plate F adapted to secure abail as G resting inside of bead c and lugs E formed from bead c extending in over plate F.
2. The can-cover C having an outer rim 0 a depressed bead c an inner upwardly-e20 tending head 0 a plate F adapted to secure a bail as G resting inside of bead c lugs D formed from bead 0 extending outward therefrom and lugs E formed from bead c extending in over plate F.
