2 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in closures for containers such as metallic barrels and has for its primary object the purpose of providing a closure which can be quickly and eihciently secured to the barrel and can be easily and quickly removed.
Another object of the invention is in providing the closure or lid with cooperable holding down means for holding the closure in seating position in the opening of the barrel head.
A further object of the invention is in providing the barrel head with a seeming collar around the bung opening having parts for cooperation with the cover of the opening.
Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had in the accompanying drawing, exemplifying the invention, and in whioh:-
barrel head showing this improved closure in secured position thereon.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view reduced in size of a securing collar used in connection with this improved closure.
Figure 4 is a detailed fragmentary section showing the manner of mounting the securing collar on the barrel head.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing l designates a metallic barrel head pro vided with the usual opening 2 for ingress and egress thereto and in the formation of the opening in the barrel head, the surrounding material of the opening is pressed outwardly so as to provide an annular outstanding flange 3 as shown in Fig. 4. A collar or ring 4 is seated on the barrel head over the flange 3 concentrically thereto, said collar having an inwardly extending seating portion 5 and an outwardly extending annular portion 6 and extended upwardly from the portion 6 are a plurality of spaced bendable projections or lips I.
When the collar 4 has been mounted in concentric seating position on the barrel head I and over the annular flange 3, said flange 3 is curled outwardly and downwardly and firmly pressed against and on the seating portion 5 of the collar 4 as shown in Fig. 2, this engaging of the flange 3 against the seating portion 5 of the collar 4, securely holding the collar in position.
The annular flange 3 when turned against and on top of the seating portion 5 of the collar 4 provides a seating portion 8 for a gasket 9, said gasket being for packing cooperation with the Figure l is a plan view of a portion of a metallic I annular flange I0 of the closure II. The closure I I is provided with a concentric countersunk portion 12 for engaging cooperation with the opening 2 of the barrel head I.
A container or barrel having a closure of this improved character is adapted for shipping materials of a solid or semi-solid such as grease or heavy oil, and in the use of the closure, after the container has been filled, the closure I l is forced into seating position in the opening 2 so that 10 the flange ill of the closure will be firmly pressed against the gasket 9, then the projections or lips I are bent over the flange III of the closure and firmly forced thereagainst as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. After shipment and when it is desired to open 15 the container, a chisel or other insertable tool is engaged beneath each bended projection 1 so that said projections can be forced from their horizontal positions of engagement against the closure to approximately vertical positions so that the 20 closure II can be readily removed.
From the aforesaid description of this improved closure and cooperable securing means, it is obvious that a simple, efiicient and inexpensive device is provided which can be repeatedly used. 25 In the event however that continued use of a closure of this character with its cooperable securing means eventually causes breakage of the projections 1 a new collar 4 having like projections 1 can be provided in which it will only be required to elevate the curled down flange 3 of the barrel head for removal of the old collar and for inserting the new collar, the flange 3 being again forced to its securing position.
Obviously, constructional modifications of the device are possible without departing from the spirit of the present invention and therefore it is to be understood that it is not necessary to limit the invention by the terms used in the foregoing descriptions, excepting such as the state of the art may require.
What I claim is:
l. A sheet metal container having a head formed with a circular opening defined by an outwardly extending annular flange, a collar having a base mounted over said head flange, said collar having a series of spacer projections and being secured on the head by fiat over-engagement of the head flange with the collar base for providing a flat gasket seat, and a cover for the opening having a. flat rim with which the projections of said collar are cooperably bent for securing the cover in the opening.
