Description
UNIT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IRVING H. SIVINK, OF DUBLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
PAINT-OIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,419, dated September 29, 1896. Application filed December 27, 1895. fierial No. 573,458. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRVING H. SWINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dublin, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in composition of paint oils or vehicles.
The object of the present invention is to provide the means for producing a very durable, adhesive, and absolutely waterproof paint vehicle or oil that can be manufactured very cheaply compared with other paintoil for house or oil paints, said paint-oil requiring no drying material to be added to dry the same, namely, such as turpentine or benzin, which impair the wearing qualities of the paint when exposed to the'weather. This oil will impart a gloss to the paint not to be obtained by any other oil.
One of the chief objects of my invention is to take cows milk after the butter-fat has been extracted by a separator but otherwise in its natural state, and by the addition of rosin or a resinous gum, sulfur or brimstone, and kerosene-oil in the proper manner and suitable proportions to convert it into a paint vehicle or oil.
Another object of my invention is to provide a paint vehicle or oil with unusual gloss by adding to milk sufficient rosin or resinous gum to secure the desired amount of gloss and adhesiveness, then adding sulfur or brimstone as a drier and to overcome the susceptibility of the rosin tosoften up by the application of heat or the rays of the sun. The sulfur or brimstone also helps to create the desired gloss.
My paint oil or vehicle is susceptible of being thinned to any desired consistency with linseed-oil.
My aforesaid oil contafins the following ingredients, namely: rosin, sulfur, milk, and deodorized kerosene-oil. The method or process of compounding or manufacturing said oil is as follows, viz: I take equal parts of rosin and sulfur and melt the same together by heat, and when yet hot I introduce into the mass equal quantities of milk and deodorized kerosene-oil until the desired consistency is obtained. comes cold, run the same through apaintmill, so as to thoroughly incorporate the ingredients, as the heat causes the casein to separate from the other properties of the milk.
Changes in the proportion and the minor details of compounding or the manufacturing of said oil may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and useful is- 1. The hereinbefore-described paint-vehicle consisting of rosin, sulfur, milk, and deodorized kerosene-oil, in the proportions substantially as described.
2. The herein-described process of converting milk into a paint vehicle or oil, by the addition of rosin, sulfur, and kerosene-oil, substantially as described.
3. The herein-described process of converting milk from which the butter-fat has been extracted by a separator, but otherwise in its natural state, into a paint-vehicle by combining with it aresinous and sulfurous compound and kerosene-oil, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IRVING H. SWINK.
