IMPROVEMENT IN NAIL-HAMMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 56,838, dated July 31, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concemf Be it known that I, W. G. WARD, of Savona, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of a hammer with my improvement applied thereto, showing the manner it is used. Fig. 2is a side elevation, a portion being in section. Fig. 3 is a face view of the hammer-head.

My invention consists in attaching to a hammer of the ordinary construction a springsocket for receiving the nail whose head abuts against a solid block or piece, whereby a person is enabled to stick, as it is called, the nail in the desired place, when it will be drawn out of the socket and the driving in of the l nail may be proceeded with in the usual way.
My invention is simple, and can be readily i applied to an ordinary hammer without in the least injuring the same for any purpose for which it may now be employed.
By using a hammer with my invention applied thereto a nail may often be stuck where it would be almost impossible to reach so as to hold the nail with one hand wliile driving it with the other.
Vith such a hammer nails may readily be driven by one-armed persons, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
Holding the nail by means of the groove in the hammer, in combination with the headblock and spring, when constructed to operate substantially as described,- and for the purpose set forth.
