Description
PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM PHELAN, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,796, dated July 31, 1866.
'skilled in the art to which it appertains to construct and use the same, reference being had to `the accompanying drawings, which are made part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a perspective view' of the boiler. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the removable arrangement of lire-box, double set of lines,
and flue-chamber. Fig. 3 is a vertical central longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a front end elevation with the furnace doors removed. Fig. 5 isV a vertical transverse section on line A A, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a top view of the front end ofthe return-fines above A*the fire-box. Fig. 7 isa vertical transverse section on the line B B, Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a vertical transverse section on the line G O, Fig. 3.
The boiler consists of an outer shell and an interior arrangement offlre-box, reverberatin gflues, and rear flue-chamber, which are so attached together and secured in the said shell as to be removable therefrom, the space around the said lire-box, flues, and chamber inclosed by the said shell forming a water and steam jacket when the parts are in position and in operation.
The depressions in the sides of the boiler at the lines of j unction of the cylindrical lire-box and the shell around the fines are covered in by plates whichform steam-chambers A B.
In the drawings, A is the steam-drum on the left, and B the steam-drum on the right, of the boiler. Into these drums the steam is yconducted by a pipe from the top of the boiler.
O indicates the front smoke-stack doors, one of which is open in Fig. 4, showing the front end of some of the return-nues and affording the means of getting at said flues for cleaning.
D shows a movable hinge-pin, which mayl be taken out when the movable fire-box, ilues, &c., are required to be removed from the shell.
F is the flange on the front end of the shell,- to which is bolted the ange F on the front end of the movable lire-box, &c. G, the door of the fire-box, shown as open in Fig. 4, afford-I ing the means of feeding the fire and cleansing the lower set of flues; H, the draft-opening for the admission of air underI the gratebars 3 I, water-space around the fire-box, lines, and rear flue-chamber; J K, the hand-holes for cleansing the water-space below the fireboX. L, Fig. 3, is the flue-.sheet at the back of the fire-box. M is the Iireebox; N, the front end, the rear liuc-chamber, O, receiving both sets of tlues; P, the back end of the shell; O, the opening at the lower side of flue-chamber, passing across the intervening space and through the shell; V, the cover of the same. R is a stay-bolt on the rear end of the boiler. T is the stack, so bolted to the jacket as to be detachable therefrom when the interior portion (consisting of the lire-box, double set of flues, and nue-chamber O) is to be removed; V, supplementary1 re-doors for regulating draft of air to the furnace.
The volatile results of combustion pass from the fire-box through the lower set offlues into the chamber O, and thence return through the upper set of fines to the stack.
Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with an outer shell or jacket, the removable arrangement of fire-box, double set of nues, and flue-chamber O, so attached to the outer shell as to permit the space between them to be used as awater and steam chamber, I. Y
2. In combination with the said shell surrounding thc said removable arrangement, steam-chambers A B on the sides of the boiler, substantially as described.
WILLIAM PHELAN.
