Description

PATENT OFFICEo HENRY FRANCE AND CHARLES L. KNOWLES, OF SACRAMENTO, CAL.
IMPROVEMENT IN SETTING TUBULAR. STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,957, dated June 23, 1863.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY FRANCE and CHARLES L. KNowLEs, both of Sacramento, inthe county of Sacramento and State o fCalifornia, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Tubular and other Steam-Boilers and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciication, in which- Figurel represents a perspective view of our invention, one side of the brick wall being broken out -to show the pits and bridge-wall. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, taken through the false-breeching or smoke-box.
Similar letters of reference in both views indicate corresponding parts.
In the present mode of generating steam in locomotive tubular boilers the heat rises from off the grate-bars and passes directly through the tubes into and out ofthe smoke-stack. In our improved steam-boiler the heat, after having passed through the tubes to the rea-r end of the boiler, is caused to deflect, by means of a plate secured on a level with the water-line or just above the tubes in the false-breeching, into pits and under the boiler to the extreme front, passing up the side into the flues on both sides ot' the boiler, arranged on a level With the water-line, and thence into the smokestack in such a manner that a large amount of heating-surface is gained and a proportionate saving in fuel is effected.
To `enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawings.
Arepresents an ordinary locomotive tubular boiler provided with atire-box, A', from which the heat and products of combustion pass -through a series of tubes, T, to the rear end of the boiler. C is the first pit, into which the lines extend from the front to the rear end of the boiler, and they are situated on the outside on a level with the water-line. They communicate through an aperture, G, with the interior of the smoke box, and through it the products of combustion pass up to the smokestack H. From this description it will be seen the heat and products ot' combustion pass three times through the full length of the boiler, iirst on emanating from the re in the tire-box A through the tubes T to the rear end of the boiler, thence down under the boiler and through the pit C, arched bridge-wall B, and pit C to the tlues E, at or near the front end of the boiler, and back through the iiues F to the smoke-stack H. By this circulation of the heat the fuel is used to the best possible advantage, and consequently great economy in fuel is eiected; and furthermore, by the use of the pits and bridge-wall, all the smoke and cinders are consumed, and thus all combustible matter contained in the fuel is turned to a useful purpose and the disagreeable eftect of smoke and cinders escaping from the smoke-stack is obviated.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The pits C C and arched bridge-wall B, in combination with a tubular or flue boiler, and with the side flues, F, constructed and applied substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. The deiecting-pla-te a over the ends of the tubes T, in combination with the pits C C', bridge-wall D, vertical ilues E, and side tlues, F, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
3. The application of the side nues, F, in combination with a steam-boiler, A, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
