- This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in furnaces and more particularly to one designed for domestic heating purposes, and it has for its primary aim to provide a furnace embodying a flue at each end with dampers also arranged at each end thereof for changing and modifying the draft conditions.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thompson, in the county of Susquehanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in furnaces and more particularly to one designed for domestic heating purposes, and it has for its primary aim to provide a furnace embodying a flue at each end with dampers also arranged at each end thereof for changing and modifying the draft conditions.
Another object of equal importance is to provide a hot water jacket for each flue to aid in utilizing the products, of combustion during travel thereof through the fines of a boiler, to which my furnace is especially adaptable, and previous to entry, into the boiler flues whereby the heat of the products during the passage thereof through the lines is maintained rather than decreased, which latter state or condition is usual in boilers of all types.
The invention further resides in the practical and salient features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the preferred embodiment being illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the furnace structure; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, the ash pit being left in elevation; Fig. 3 is a front elevation with one of the upper doors omitted; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the upper part of the furnace with the front wall and water jacket being removed and a portion of the front head broken away; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the front waterjacket looking upwardly.
Using similar characters of reference to designate corresponding parts, the numeral 1 denotes the ash pit upon the ends of which are supported the hollow heads 2, each of the latter having parallel and inward angular extension consisting of horizontal arms or legs 4 carrying on their inner ends the vertical posts or terminal legs 5. Water tubes 6 are arranged within the fire box 3 and connect the front and rear heads 2' for the circulation of water.
Mounted on the four vertical posts 5 is a steam boiler 7 constituting the subject matter of my prior application serial No. 24,764, filed April 29, 1915, of which this is a division. This boiler has a plurality of flue tubes 8 and is formed with openings 9 in its front and rearwalls.
A. water jacket 10 is mounted on the rear head and its horizontal arms 4: and defines with the rear wall of the boiler a flue 11 in which are provided upper and lower dampers 12, 13, the damper 13 being journaled in the aforesaid horizontal arms 4. The water jacket communicates with the underlying head through elbow 14: carried on the lower portion of the jacket while upwardly from the top portion of the latter extends a neck 15 across the flue 11 for communicating with the interior of the boiler through the opening 9 in the rear wall.
Capping the upper edge of the jacket or flue is the bottom section 16 of a smoke stack, said upper edgebeing beveled, preferably to accommodate for the connection in either a vertical or horizontal manner as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1.
The front water jacket 17 seats on the horizontal arms 4 of the forward head 2 and is secured to the front wall of the boiler to define therewith a forward flue 18 in which is a damper 19 journaled in said horizontal arms. An inwardly extending pipe section 20 connects the space of the water jacket 17 with the interior of the boiler through the opening 9 formed in the front wall.
Having a flue at each end of the furnace, it is found practical and economical to provide a damper at each end of the ash pit whereby the draft may be regulated at both ends and, by the proper manipulation of the dampers in the fines and firebox, the draft may be directed from either end of the furnace to the opposite end. In carrying out this, I provide a damper 21 at the rear of the ash pit and another damper 22 in the clean-out door 23 at the front of the ash pit,
eacp damper being under independent contro The forward jacket 17 is provided with a cut-away portion 2a in its lower part which cooperates with an inversely arranged cutaway portion 25 in the under-lying head to form a door opening closable by the door 26. A series of horizontal slots 27 are also provided in the front water jacket through which the fiues 8 are accessible for cleaning purposes, said slots being normally closed by doors 28.
It is, of course, understood that while I have shown water jackets at the ends of the boiler, said jackets constituting end walls or cover plates, I may employ solid cover plates to define the fines.
What is claimed is:
1. A structure of the character described including a fire box, a head provided in its upper part with a cutaway portion, a boiler supported over the fire box on the head, a jacket secured to the boiler and provided with a cutaway portion in its lower part to supplement the head cutaway portion in 3. A furnace comprising a fire box including heads each of which is formed with inwardly extending arms, a boiler supported on the arms of the heads, cover plates seating on the arms of the headsand defining flues with the adjacent walls of the boilers, and a damper in each flue journaled in the arms of the respective head.
4:. A furnace comprising a fire box including heads each of which is formed with inwardly extending horizontal arms having vertical posts, a boiler supported on the posts of the heads, a cover plate seating on the horizontal arms of each head and defining a flue with the adjacent wall of the boiler, and a damper for the flue.
